I'm very pleased to read your positive comments. I'm not a MS parent yet but it's a foregone conclusion that both my boys will be going there as my husband is an alumni and my father-in-law used to teach there. I do have my concerns about how tough it will be academically for my little rascals (now N1 & N2) - my daughter is in P1 at CHIJ OLGC and I have been very impressed with how they have allowed them to settle in and find their feet in the new world of primary school. I'm not so sure if MS will be so understanding.24hr-mum:
so far how is the new principal, the teachers and the boys at maris pri?
The new principal is young and dynamic. As an old boy of MS, the new principal should be able to assimulate into the culture easier. I notice that there are quite a number of new initiatives by the school. One being, they are now offering scholarship to the primary boys who score well in PSLE and willing to stay back for the secondary education.
I can't help but also want to mention about Mrs Sim, the vice principal. Being a Catholic school, she definitely carry herself as a loving principal not just in words but in action. Call me shallow, but I completely respect her when she wouldn't hesitate and give a tight hug heartily to a sweaty (and smelly...
) MS boy who greeted her during a school celebration.
In general, the teachers I met are mainly quite strict with the boys, but I think it's absolutely necessary when they need to manage a class full of frogs and snails and puppy-dogs' tails. I have seen one cool teacher who demonstrate strictness in absolute calmness turning frogs and snails into gentlemen. I have also seen one whom after a school excursion just couldn't control the boys. In general, they are mostly responsiblle. I think as the primary level go higher, the level of stress in the teachers probably also increase - This year, I started to receive text messages from my boy's teacher even on weekends - I am grateful but at the same time I could feel the teacher's stress (or is it just my own stress?).
The boys...what can I say. My boy is one of them. The boys I have met there are not much different from the boy I have at home. They can be loving, mischevious, hardworking, lazy, helpful, indifferent all rolled into one. They are gentlemen in the making....not there yet....but in progress  -

Thanks for the inside knowledge! I absolutely agree that with boys, it is essential to be strict. They are such monsters sometimes.24hr-mum:

Fully agree with you on the Principal & VP Mrs Sim. She is absolulely wonderful. My boy is in P2. So far came across wonderful teachers & one not so wonderful teacher (she's not mean or nasty, she's nice to the boys but she's blur & clueless).24hr-mum:

Love the school's bi-cultural environment. My son enjoys going to school very much & do his friends. They seem to have so many ideas how to spend their little free time, explore the Science garden, play badminton, go library etc etc. -

It's not a good sign to be receiving text message from teacher. It just showed that my boy was underperforming and the teacher need parental intervention.wow, i m surprised the sch teacher got msged u!

My apology, I would like to correct the term \"scholarship\" I used. The school actually call it Merit Award, offering a $1000 upfront and $500 each year from Sec 1-4 subjected to continual good academic performance. I do not have any statistic on how many boys left the sch for other sec. Personally, I felt that we are all very pragmatic folks, boys with better PSLE T-score would always want to go for school with higher COP. Likewise, schools which can attract better students would not want students with lower T-score.the scholarship is gd. how much is the amt? is it becos many boys left the sch for other sec sch?

Your concern is not unfounded. Academically, my personal take is the school is very driven to deliver. I am somewhat convinced that the teachers' KPI are the results of the boys. I especially felt it this year which I am not sure whether is it due to the fact that my boy has moved to the upper primary or whether is it that the new principal has a scorecard to deliver.
CHIJ's a girl school. Boys are wired differently. I do not know how they settle the girls down in your girl's school, but I am sure the culture would be different. Please be open and embrace the difference if MS is your final and only option. Having said that, MS does also help the boys to settle down. I know in the least they have a Marist befriender programme (not sure if I got the name correct) which is like a buddy programme to team up the P4 with the P1, allowing the P4 boys to help the P1 boys to assimulate into the enviornment and at the same time, provide the opportunity to the P4 boys to hone their leadership and mentoring skills.beanstalk:
You are most welcome. I must \"disclaim\" that the \"knowledge\" is just personal subjective view and perception. Please take them with lots of pinches of salt.

Glad my personal perception got seconded. With regards to the bi-cultural environment, I very recently learnt from a friend with a P6 boy that there are a total of 4 out of 8 classes of students taking Higher Chinese which I feel was quite impressive. Last year, I learnt that my niece’s school (another SAP school) was trying to limit the Higher Chinese subject students to just 1 class from P4 level onwards but received violent objections from the PSG so in the end, there were 2 classes. Frankly speaking, I can’t help feeling that would just be an easy way out for the school to shine in its PSLE report card. -

The boys who are now good men out there is his lasting legacy. This good work will outlast this episode. That cannot be taken away from Bro Anthony. Let us also remember that and be compassionate. -
