        Hi all,

We are undecided as MHS is nearer to our place but we are very very weak in Chinese, ie i do not know Chinese and my dh barely know. We are afraid that ds will struggle in MHS and detest Chinese and do badly in school.
        Hi Jenao,
Can't advise you on which school is better for your child. The only thing you may wish to take note is that MS does not offer normal chinese. All boys start with Higher Chinese in P1. The standard for chinese is very high but so far, I have found all the Chinese teachers to be very good and dedicated.

Hi Acforfamily, sorry to ride on yr thread.... since u have 2 boys in MSH, any insights to share... abt the school , teachers ? the P1 year ? .. is it really stressful there , i heard plenty of HW woes ... ? My boy is very different from the elder sister, @ the same age, he is not as mature emotionally and alot more playful... but beneath the playfulness, he revealed that he is very scared of primary school... moving out of comfort zone .... about making new friends (he has no one from Kindy going to MSH) and if there will be bullies .... but he is putting up a brave front and told us that he is very excited... but I know deep down, he is very apprehensive.. so I am also trying to gently help him, and encourage him .... wonder how the school helps the boys gradually ease in .... not just academically, but emotionally , who generally tend to mature slowly (not all, just a general comment) @ this age before they catch up with the girls later. .. Do they give tons of HW for P1 ..... expectations of the teachers ?
sorry for the whole host of questions, but any insights will be greatly appreciated πŸ™‚ The experiences of my dd helps but I have a nagging feeling this guy is going thro something different
              :?:

On the contrary, I felt that there was hardly any homework. Maths is from the workbook and Chinese is practising words from the textbook. English is probably different now as I understand that there is no more textbook.

My son enjoyed his P1 very much. Frankly, if your child has gone to Kindergarten and learnt things, P1 would be a breeze. The P1 teachers that I encountered are very caring.

Actually, little things may worry them. My son was actually worried that he may miss the stop when coming home until I explained that the 'uncle' driver will tell him when it is his stop! πŸ˜„

As for bullies, do talk to your child every day to find out how he is coping. If he is really being bullied, he may drop clues. My son was 'stressed' by a boy in the school bus, but after a while, he knew how to handle him. They will learn, so don't worry.

Thanks for the thoughts, guess will have to let him swim abit.... and let him come of his shell alittle... hopefully, he will outgrow his shyness and gain more confidence .....
I know the boys have to be in school by 705am for silent reading in class ? Is that compulsary ? or they cna be there before 720 ?

School starts at 7.10am for Morning reading. But as long as they are there before flag raising (7.30), they are not marked β€˜late’. At least this is what I encountered.

This is not an uncommon thing to happen. It happened to my boy also, and also my friend's boy, whom is in another sch.

Do talk to him to find out what is happening in sch and on his bus rides. Tell him what to do if he is gets bullied. For my boy's case, the bully continues his bullying ways, so I called up the sch and let them know what is happening. The next afternoon, the discipline master went up to the bus and scolded the bully.
