      Hi, please help

The figure below is made up of a semicircle, a square and 3 quadrants. The side of the square is 20cm.
For each of the following, use the calculator value of pie to find

      a) the area of the shaded part, correct to 2 decimal places, (answer given 1481.96 )

      b) the perimeter of the shaded part, correct to 2 decimal places (answer given is 188.50 cm)

      hi, please help. TIA

A tank measuring 10 cm by 10 cm by 30 cm had 2 identical cuboids in it. Water was flowing into the tank for 5 minutes at a rate of 240 cm3 per minute. Each cuboid had a dimension of 5cm by 5 cm by 10cm.
      http://i58.tinypic.com/2iapjly.png\">
To find the height of water in the tank,
      Volume of water / base

Base = base of tank less base of cube
      = 10*10 less 5*5
      = 75

      Volume of water in 5 minutes = 240*5= 1200
      Height = 1200 / 75 = 16

      Is that the answer?

      Assume number is 100u
Shift 2 decimal places to left then 1u
      Difference is 99u = 245.5
      Sum is 101u

Hi I have a maths problem and will be very grateful if someone can help me urgently. Thanks

When Peter crossed the finish line of 60-m race, he was ahead of brian by 10 m and ahead of Ravi by 20m. Brian and Ravi continued go race to the finish line without changing their speeds. How many meters would Brian be ahead of Ravi when Brian reached the finish line?

      :thankyou:
When peter finish, brian would be at 50m mark and ravi at 40m mark
So ravi is 4/5 of brian's distance
When brian reached, he will be at 60m mark
      Then ravi = 4/5*60=48m

The average height of a group of boys was 1.62m. After 4 more boys of height 1.82m each joined the group, the new average height was 1.70m.
How many boys were there in the group at first?

Let the number of boys be a.
      (1.62 x a) + (4 x 1.82) / (a + 4) = 1.70
      a = 6.
      Ans : 6 boys

      Thanks.
I believe school wants the kids to solve it without using algebra. Able to help?[/quote]It is easier to visualize this with bar charts but I could not upload it. So will try to explain
The average height of the new group of 4 boys dropped to 1.7 from 1.82
      1.82 - 1.7=0.12 per boy
      4 boys 0.12 *4=0.48

The 0.48 has to be distributed among the old boys to bring them from 1.62 to 1.7 ; a difference of 0.08
If total of 0.48 is spread across the old boys of 0.08 each, then there must be 6 boys ( 0.48/0.08=6)

Really ah..die..I never expose those Olympiad Maths to my kids and neither does the school. I trust the schools to teach whatever needed to score in exam incl PSLE. If that is the case, does that mean I shd start researching on such courses?
My kid did the psle too and it is not true that there are Olympiad maths questions. The last question which is usually the most difficult question ( I could be wrong) is on area.
Please do not scare yourself or your child. I am a strong advocate that if a child is not strong in Maths, please do not \"torture\" them with Olym Maths questions. Let them learn at their own pace.
