I really disagree this way to learning Chinese
They learn hanyu pinyin first before going on to Chinese words. It will help them to read 'difficult' Chinese words as they progress on. -
Hanyu Pinyin spelling is only for the first few months. They are tested on hanyu pinyin (included in CA, SA) so it is a must to know it well.

Not to worry. I had the same thought initially. DS is able to spell chinese words in hanyu pinyin better than me now. And I was an A1 student in Chinese! He actually corrected me when I pronounced the words wrongly. I am truly amazed how he learned all these in one year. So let the teachers do their job. I'm sure they have their reasons for doing so. I still rem when I got C6 for my AO CL, the Chinese teacher was so glad to 'get rid' of me from the class!! He thks I 'ate too much potato' liao!! So a C6 was a fantastic score!!
That's why for ds I must make sure he is in a CL environment from as young as possible!!

It should be in their personal folder.
DS wrote ε¬γon 30 Jan in his Marist Buddy yesterday.
The teacher signed beside his note β¦ Maybe to ack he has writen correctly?
