tabomama, for some reason, the teachers here seem to be running at a fast and furious pace. I asked my friends whose kids are in various different schools, and they don't seem to have much homework! But on a positive note, the kids will be used to the pace as they progress upwards
Btw, where do you live? Near MCS? -
Hi michyms
Good morning! Ya… there is really a lot of HW… esp for us since we are trying to catch up with the class’s progress.
No we live in Yishun, so its quite a distance, around 20-30 mins bus ride.
Just been advised by Ms Nora that all CCA slots are taken… so prob DD no need to travel early to school for the time being. -
Hi tabofamily, a warm welcome to MCS!
How is your DD getting on?
I live in Yishun too! Is your DD taking the sch bus? -
tabomama, I'm sure your dd will be able to catch up soon enough. Jia You :rahrah:
Dd's form teacher just emailed to inform there is gonna be another topical Maths test... this feels like there's more tests than when they are in past when they only have 1 big test for each semester. -
Hi michyms,
It is just non-stop work from now on. Unfortunately, this will go on for the many years to come. -
Hey michyms,
Ms Nora seems to be really on the ball keeping parents of her students updated with what’s happening. I have not heard anything about any upcoming Maths Test.
By the way, our DDs are early in using Model templates. It is only Feb! I have not experienced this bullet train speed with students from other schools, not even those from some top schools! -

Your’re lucky DD’s teacher kept you well posted. For me, I don’t even know of those informal test till DD tells me
-
Gin, my dd’s form teacher is not Ms Nora, it’s Mdm Joko.
Yes, tell me about it. My dd has been struggling to draw the models. Last night it took us 30 mins to draw the models for AS3.4, Q5 and 6. Those 2 step problem sums are really complex for them… I had to resort to all sorts of tricks to explain to dd, including using counters, telling stories, and displaying it on the table for her to visualise…
When are the kids supposed to start models? Pri 2?
gorilla, we are also not informed about the speed tests. But dd’s form teacher will inform of the major tests. Maybe you can email your girl’s form teacher for more info.
Just to share - Maths topical test 2 is on Friday, March 2 (I don’t know the topics though). English diagnostics test next Monday consists of spelling (list already given out to the girls) and listening comprehension. -
Hi michyms,
Used to be about Term 3 when they start to use Model templates. Was not informed of Maths Topical Test. Tks for info.
Listening Comprehension? Like?
Oh… Whatever! Looks like DD will have to just keep learning. As long as she is learning something each day, I will just leave it at that. Learning is a life long process, not a rat race. Crazy system… -
Gin, I have no idea how they do listening comprehension. There is simply no way to prepare for that, so I will just leave it, and hope that she manages it somehow.
I really do agree that learning is a life long thing and its the process that counts, not the grades. I am trying my best not to stress myself or dd… just let it be as long as she stays consistent and is paying attention in class. I feel like panicking at the thought of those "dreaded" model and heuristic type problem sums, but I told myself cannot give dd the impression that its scary, so I keep telling her its a fun game to decode the messages behind the problem sums… and try to keep it fun and light.
