Hi Parents, following the remover of AS, the next biggest change is the remover of P4 streaming and class allocation. Starting this year, P4 will be randomly allocated to their P5 classes which are all mix ability. There will be no more top classes. As a known fact, current system benefits the top 80 only because the best teachers are teaching these 2 classes. The new system will benefit the remaining 280 in general. DD1 will be the first batch to go through this change. I hope this is something positive. Speaking to a few parents, some feel there is a need to keep 2 top classes to stretch the potential of these HA students. Otherwise they will be bored by the slower pace of learning. What is your take?

        Not to worry

A lot of schools are moving away from the \"Top few classes\" concept, moving into \"All Mixed Ability\" (MA) classes concept. This is the new trend happening, in schools.

        Under the new concept :-
even though all P5 classes going to become MA classes, subject Banding will still take Place.

        That means :-
for certain subjects like Maths & Chinese, when school bell ring for lessons, students from the same P5 MA class will go to different groups assigned, based on their results at end of P4 SA2. Some students will go to High Ability Maths / Chinese group assigned, while other students (from within the same MA class) will go to another average-paced group, instead. In other words, when school bell ring for lessons, there will be movement around, going to different group assigned, from students within the same P5 MA class.

These 2 subjects (Maths & Chinese) : are often singled out for Banding, because P5 (Maths & Chinese) are very tough, due to depth of content taught, hence got to manage the different students' learning capability, or competency level.

        For subject English -
No movement nor grouping around, because there is no High Ability classes, for English subject. So, students remain inside the same P5 MA class, when school bell ring for English lessons.

However, students who are weak in English, will be identified by Tr, to attend extra re-medial lessons, pull them pull up English, to prepare for coming Psle major P6 exam.

        But, for subject Science -
Some schools also band Science, based on year-end P4 results, while other schools don't. You have to clarify with Tr : whether Pei Chun primary band P5 Science, or not.

Above is how the new model work, when schools remove / abolish Top few P5 classes, moving towards all Mixed Ability classes.

Based on certain subjects defined by your school, students will still be banded, by subjects, based on their year-end P4 individual subjects' performance.

We have come to end of 2017 P4 Term 1. This week is already week 10, last week of Term 1.
At the next parents meet Tr session, u may clarify with your Form Tr : if above model work for next year 2018 P5 : based on what's happening to many primary schools now, that had already moved away from Top few number of classs concept, into \"All Mixed Ability\" groups concept.

Subject based banding was not mentioned in the level briefing so I am uncertain if this is what the school is moving towards.

For subject based banding, will it become a case where you see the same faces in the different subjects classes? Most HA students are good in all subjects and maybe only a handful are good in Math and Science, weaker in languages for example. This means when student A goes to the best class for Math, she sees almost same classmates as when she moves to best class for HCL. Then might as well put the best students together and save the time and effort in moving around and changing classes.

In all policies, it will benefit some and put others at a disadvantage. For my DD1, I think this change is good for her as she is not so academically inclined and if base on current system, she will be in an average D to F class. It is very embarrassing to step into a \"lousy class\" according to my girls.

For DD1, I prefer she interacts with the better students and motivates her to continue improving. As for younger one who is more academically inclined, the new change might slow down her ability to learn more and stretch her potential. In a mix ability class, teachers need to slow down for the rest to catch up.

Are there schools that have top classes that put the top 120 in random HA classes (does not need to differentiate A, B or C) and the rest in random mix ability?

personally, I think the parents of potentially the top 2 classes will cry...and the rest of the classes will welcome the change..so in general maybe more ppl will feel happy with the change?

bus driver number can be found in the school website. call the driver to ask.
If your kid is going P1 next year, he/she will be in afternoon session, so is not going to be 6am.

Hi, need some help! I’m considering to put my girl in Pei Chun under phase 2b. May I check if anyone knows usually the school will take in how many parent volunteers each year?

                    I think this is necessary.

At the end of the day, streaming has its disadvantages. Students that are weaker, generally tend to be weaker.

I was helping out a student care just about a month ago and realised the stark difference between two students of different abilities. One was always working to keep up, the other was always doing the bare minimum so that he would not be scolded.

I think streaming serves as a good reminder to my weaker student that he was not good enough.
This is just not a good representation as it is with two students.

I do think that this image sums up a flaw in our current system.

                      Hi love1001,

                      To your qn:
‘Are there schools that have top classes that put the top 120 in random HA classes (does not need to differentiate A, B or C) and the rest in random mix ability?’

Yes. At the moment my boy’s school streaming is like this in P5. Top 120 to top 3 classes (we don’t have a top class, only top 3), the rest in mixed ability n one smaller class for the kids who need more help. It seems that the same teachers that teaches the top class also teaches the small class.

Sorry for interrupting. Was trying to find out abt the streaming for my fren whose kid is in peichun in P4 n I came across your question.

Parents, I am unable to get a slot for the PTM. All slots, form teacher and Chinese teacher, were taken the moment I logged in on 8 May. Did you face similar issue?

I find it weird that the school suddenly change the way that the PTM is managed. It was all good until this year. Shouldn’t it be made available to all parents just like in previous years??!! Why limit to a handle of parents only. It is important for parents with children in upper primary to get a chance to see the teachers, regardless of results.

I disagree that PTM is meant for weaker students only. If a child needs attention, teachers should have already contacted and spoke with the parents, not wait till PTM in that 10-20min to address the issue.

Too many unexpected changes this year but sad to conclude, none is good.
