Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]

I’ve a couple of CCA questions to ask. My daughter only joins RGS this July (Yr 2), and we need to find a CCA. I have discovered that some will not accept mid-year entrants, so can anyone suggest a Performing arts/Club & society that she could consider? I know that she may not qualify for some of them anyway. Sports and uniformed groups are out. I’ve asked for the contact of the teacher in charge of CCAs and will check with her too.
Is there still a distinction between Core/Merit CCAs or can any be taken as a main CCA? -

Hi slmkhoo, does your girl has a niche? If yes, then it is easier. If no, then it is likely that she might end up in club/society or uniformed groups. I know of some girls who did not secure any CCA offers during the CCA selection, went on to the second phase of CCA selection but mainly ended up in UG.I've a couple of CCA questions to ask. If your girl does not get into the CCA of her choice, she can still go for selection again at beginning of year 3. -

She actually wanted Guides, but the teacher in charge says they don't accept mid-year entrants, and she indicated that other UGs may be the same. Waiting until Yr 3 doesn't seem like a good option as she has to join something this year and it seems silly to transfer after 1 semester. She is interested in some of the performing arts and clubs/societies, but I don't know if they accept mid-year entrants. I hope the other CCAs are not as inflexible as the Guides.

Can Club/Societies be taken as the main CCA? Does the Core/Merit distinction still hold? -
slmkhoo:
All CCAs can be main CCA, except Library, Tamil Dance and may be one other. There was a CCA briefing for Yr 1 parents at the begining of the year (I think at the orientation tea). If you are contacting the CCA Head, ask him (its a him) for a copy of the slides. Clubs and societies reduced their intake this year. I remember many of them have < 5 slots. However do not worry as the CCA Head assure parents at the briefing that every girl will get to a CCA acceptable to her.

Thanks! I have communicated with the CCA HOD and am now waiting for a reply. I hope we can work out something that my girl will be happy with. I've just received an email about meeting the director of academic studies and placement tests for my daughter before school begins - I didn't realise there would be so many things to do!slmkhoo:

While I'm compiling my 'to do' list, can parents here give me an idea of how many of each school uniform item I should get for my daughter? 3 of each? I understand that there are quite a few different items - pinafore, blouse, culottes, T-shirt, shorts ... have I left anything out? Are all these available at Bibi & Baba? Anything else besides tests, CCA, books and uniforms that I may have overlooked? Thanks! -
Simkhoo,
Uniform - pinafore and shirt - 2-3 sets, depending on how fast you launder. I say 3 is more comfortable.
Culottes - 1
PE t-shirt and shorts - PE is twice a week so 1-2 sets, depending on how fast you launder. There will also be house T-shirts and CCA t-shirts which your dd might purchase along the way.
All the above, except the house and CCA t-shirts, are available from bibi & baba. -

When will your gal sit for the placement tests? R there many papers she's going to be tested on? -
Funx3:
Thanks! Is there a particular approved model of calculator? Can they use the one they used for PSLE? Computer purchases are my husband's job, but I will remind him. OK, added tie, badge and name tag to the list. Is the house colour reflected on the badge, or is it the year? If it's year, which colour should I get? I guess we won't know the house until later.

Placement tests are scheduled for the week before school begins as we only get back in mid-June. She will be tested on English, Maths and Science. I've been given a list of topics for Maths and Science, and English will be Compre and Compo. -

Name tag reflects the year. Year 2s are yellow. You can get it from the bookshop. House color is based on your dd's class. Calculator is different from that used in PSLE.
