Hi there,
My girl didn't pass her music theory grade 3. We were planning to try for SCGS DSA this year and grade 3 music theory is a requirement for choir DSA. Anyone has any experience to share, is this music theory a \"must have\" and there's no exception to it? I'm crushed and feeling depressed as my hopes of her trying for DSA seem to be gone now.
Appreciate any sharing of experiences.. thank you. -
Hi there, if anyone is interested, the SCGS DSA exercise is now open for application at the SCGS website here - http://www.scgs.edu.sg/content/view/97/134/
Question - the online form does not ask for testimonials.. will testimonials be of any use then for SCGS DSA exercise?
Thank you for any comments! -

Sorry for the late reply. Hope it is not too late. I can't advise you much on SCGS DSA as my girl did not apply for it. But through my personal experience, it is no harm trying as I know of cases which fell short of the criteria required but were still successful in their DSA. There are other factors the schools will consider such as the GAT, interview, etc. However, I would also like to highlight that it is also important to get your girl prepared mentally if it is unsuccessful. The effect came after knowing the outcome of the result of DSA. Thus, you must ensure that she is able to take it positively whatever the outcome and does not affect her concentration on preparing for PSLE. Wish your girl all the best in DSA and PSLE -

Thank you TTBCOOL.. yes you are right, i need to remind her that whatever the outcome preparing well for PSLE is still key. while i'm not very hopeful that she will be selected via DSA (sometimes it looks unlikely to me.. almost like a lucky draw, Toto, 4-D, top class etc.. why am i not the one? lol), i know of a mummy whose DD got selected via DSA but kept the good news away till just before PSLE..so as to keep her focus in preparation and she would not be complacent and slack..

If i were the \"chosen\" one, i wonder how long i can keep the good news away.. but i think it's wise move to do so, even for a few days! -

Hi Tearsforfear,
For the case you mentioned that the mum kept the good news from her dd, it must depend on the type of character your child has. Some children might react negatively and lose confidence while some children will strive to work harder to get into their dream school if they are not successful in their DSA. Thus, you must really understand your child well. From my experence last year, I think you should only DSA to your child’s dream school and not just because as a safety net as your girl is unable to change schools once she is accepted by the school through DSA. Some children regretted their acceptance of the DSA which were not their dream school after they managed to score very well for PSLE which enabled them to get into their dream schools. Do think carefully before you submit your DSA application. -

Hi TTBCOOL,
The case I mentioned where the mum kept the good news away.. it was not for long i think.. Rather than telling her DD immediately of the good news, the mum chose not to let her know till later.. so there is more focus on preparation and not getting overjoyed and slack in preparation.. In any case I'm sure the child will ask why the results are not released yet etc.. can't keep it away for long really, unless the parent wants to tell a white lie that the DSA application is unsuccessful.. Oh well, I won't think so far for now.. I'm hoping that my DD will put in effort to do some serious revision before the new semester starts (together with the madness of lessons and hw etc.)..
Thank you for your kind reminder. I will remind DD the purpose of DSA and the significance once a DSA offer is accepted.. -
@tearforfear: i agreed with you. Both my girls tried out tests for DSA. It was not successful. They were matured enough that it was a risk if their EOY result is much better…they will have more choice to prick their dream schools. Anyway, cut short, my girls surprisingly did very well in PSLE, they went into their based on their own merit. Also they can switch CCA easily relative to DSA students.

Hi esme38, my DD went for audition few weeks back and this coming week will be attending the interview.. I'm very glad that she has made it this far.. Frankly, I have not much confidence in her academic results.. she is not motivated and easily distracted.. It's not easy to make her sit and focus in her studies and revision. I'm still struggling to make her stay focused everyday. Almost like fighting a losing battle but still persevere on... So for us, if she can get a CO from SCGS it's really an insurance, not that i will stop nagging at her to study. I told her that the last thing we want is for her to end up in the last class.. -
Hi tearsforfears,
The teachers and educators at SCGS are good. I can vouch for them.
Just tell your DD just be herself, relax and take it as a life learning experience what is an interview being like. My DD is in Sec 2 now. Everyday, she enjoys her school life…relates to us innocent jokes by or about teachers and herself. -
When is SCGS' Open House this year ? I remember the last time I visited the (then) new school campus at Dunearn Road was like 18 years ago, when they just moved there.. Planning to bring my niece to your Open House after her PSLE this year..
