Wah, didn't know about all these. I wonder if she could be the one GCT had in mind when he was answering reporters during the PE about there being possibilities of a female President to come...
Agree.Lilac66:
The quality I see in her is her ability to tread on issues with care w/o stepping on unnecessary land mines. I would not want a yes-man for the Speaker role too, that's why I'm eager to see how she handles the session when thed debate on this AIM issue starts. Definitely want to see impartiality when she's in her role.
just my feelings lor..
I have no qualms with this lady getting the house speaker’s job because to me she’s less of a politician and more of someone who dutifully wants to serve the public, in the same vein as Richard Hu, Lee Bee Wah, TCB and, to a lesser extent, Tony Tan. These people rarely, if ever, speak ills of their opposition but are more focus in serving. Moreover, this lady has a humble background and truly knows how’s like to be in the bottom tier of the society.
No doubt a house speaker’s job differs from that of a public servant. But with her honest and humble disposition, she will fit in well ihmo. To be honest, she probably has been earmarked for greater role when she was one of the few chosen to speak at last year’s National Day. For sure, you’ll not see any infraction from her. -

No, I am not. \"I never denied doing this\" is a poor excuse when the reason why I never denied is because nobody asked me, and nobody asked me because nobody knew.pirate, I think you are splitting hairs. The MIW have never denied that AIM was owned by the party. WP was in no doubt either, so why the issue now?
If you are arguing that the MIW did not make a big public announcement through the press at the point of appointing AIM to manage the TC's software (in the name of transparency), then I think the expectation is not reasonable.
What the WP knew is irrelevant. What is relevant is what was disclosed to the public.
I don't expect MIW to make a big public announcement to the press at the point of appointing AIM to manage the TC's software. However, I do expect a disclosure statement in the TC's annual reports or financial statements.
Something along the lines of, \"The Town Council has agreed to sell and lease back the Town Council's share of its managment software to AIM. AIM is a company wholly owned by the PAP, of which all the elected members of the Town Council are also members\" will suffice. -

I wonder if there's ever been intention to reveal to the public about AIM being wholly owned by the PAP if not for this incident. I mean, I had this \"PA is not PAP!!\" shoved in my face by a grassroot volunteer during the last GE

Yeah, yeah, isn't it obvious, the name's different - there's one 'P' short.
It is more like the less people know, the better...cos if you don't ever know, you won't ever ask. Why even mention it to invite unnecessary questioning?
So, yes, there it goes - which other similar companies are there under PAP? -

Polling Day 26th Jan for Punggol East By Election
(source: http://theonlinecitizen.com/2013/01/polling-day-26th-jan-for-punggol-east-by-election/)
\"President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued a writ of election today at 4pm. The Nomination Day will be on the 16th Jan and polling day would be on Jan 26.
This is the second time by-elections are called within a span of one year. In both cases, the parliamentary seat was vacated by the MPs over extra marital affairs.
There will be a total of 5 parties contesting in this by election. The People’s Action Party (PAP), Workers’ Party (WP), Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Reform Party (RP) and the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA). Former Singapore Peoples’ Party (SPP) member Benjamin Pwee has indicated that he will be contesting as an independent candidate.\" -
Polling Day for Punggol East by-election on Jan 26
(Source: http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest+News/Singapore/Story/A1Story20130109-394351.html)
In less than a year, Singapore will have a second by-election, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has decided to call for a by-election in Punggol East, less than two months after it fell vacant.
At 4pm on Wednesday, President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued a writ of election setting Nomination Day for next Wednesday. Polling day would be on Jan 26.
The surprise announcement comes just a day after PAP dropped a hint as to who its candidate might be. Colorectal surgeon Koh Poh Koon had triggered a round of speculation when he appeared at the Meet-the-People session in Punggol East on Tuesday.
All eyes will also now be on the opposition, where at least five different players have tossed their hat into the ring, or at least said they were going to.
The Workers’ Party (WP) and Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) contested the seat in 2011, and both have indicated that they will return. Joining them are the Reform Party (RP), the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and former Singapore People’s Party candidate Benjamin Pwee.
Both the RP and the SDP have conducted visits there. RP chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam has indicated that he would be the one contesting while SDP is understood to be picking among party treasurer Vincent Wijeysingha, psychiatrist Ang Yong Guan and Dr Paul Tambyah, a senior consultant in infectious diseases.
The seat became vacant on Dec 12, when then Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer resigned over an extra-marital affair.
At the 2011 General Election, the 33,281 voters in Punggol East were the only ones with three names on their ballot.
The PAP won the seat with 54.54 per cent of the votes. WP candidate Lee Li Lian won 41.01 per cent of the votes while Mr Desmond Lim of the SDA lost his deposit when he garnered just 4.45 per cent of the votes.
The polls will be held amid an ongoing debate about a contract between PAP town councils and Action Information Management (AIM). The topic has been the subject of a war of words between the Workers’ Party-run Aljunied-Hougang Town Council and the PAP-owned AIM.
PM Lee though sought to take the AIM saga off the burner on Tuesday when he announced that the Ministry of National Development would review the transaction between the town councils and AIM. Still, the issue is expected to get an airing in Parliament on Monday as WP has filed an adjournment motion. -

gotta hand it to him for d timing.”Polling Day 26th Jan for Punggol East By Election“
这一招叫 “长痛不如短痛“!
he prolly took into his calculations dat oppo parties will not be able to sort out among themselves on short notice, thereby ending up with a multi corner fight to dilute d votes n will favour d incumbent party. Also take some heat off d AHTC-AIM-MIW issues. -
yup call in fast before more worms coming out of the tins

Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng, at his Facebook chat on Sunday night
“I know there are naturally concerns if there is a conflict of interest or whether residents’ money (Service & Conservancy Charges) have been misused. However, we should also look at the industry practice of managing IT systems, whether Aim has failed in its commitment to the TCs, and if the fees it has been collecting have been unreasonable...
People might be reading too much into things and are drawn into some political motivations. However, we cannot forget that TCs are all political organisations...
PCF (PAP Community Foundation) is the community arm of PAP, and it runs kindergartens and childcare centres. I don’t think just because the directors are former MPs, the company is owned by PAP. There are MPs, both PAP and opposition parties, who have their own companies, it doesn’t mean these companies belong to the parties.
It is open knowledge that Aim is owned by PAP. I was referring to other companies owned by PAP and clarifying that just becos the company directors are PAP members, it does not necc mean that they are PAP-owned companies. As to the no. of companies owned by PAP, I am afraid I do not have the info. I do not know of any others.
I am sure more light will come out of the Aim fiasco. But I know there are many $2 companies around, it does not mean they are all fly-by-night companies.”
u understand d part he said in bold?
