All About Taekwondo
-
Hi parents, I started learning taekwondo in p4 after I got goldstar for swimming and my mum decided that I should start another sport.
It is actually depending on the parents if they want the kid to learn the art for what purposes. Recreation? Self defense? Or Competition?
For me I got into one of the best club in Singapore which is ACME taekwondo.(Tampines CCs are under them) So the training is quite tough and painful for those in the special team(sparring and performing team).
But if you just want your kid to learn it for recreation and self defense I think any clubs or CC that provide taekwondo is good enough. The youngest kid I have seen in a class was around P1.(however they do not remember the moves for grading… so maybe older?)
Regarding sparring, I can only say if you do not really want your kid to be expose to any injury, do not put him into this sport. Even though most sparring sessions are light and harmless, you will never know what the other kid is thinking and yes accidents do happen.
If you really want your kid to learn a martial art and do not want him injured, why not try another art that do not involves sparring?=D -

lol... my intent is for them to learn defensive skills... less aggressive... shaolin is also defensive in nature!!! not sure if there is a \"branch\" here... :? :? :?titank:
Hi Hi Hmsg,
Akido? Someone tell me to also consider Karate. Wow like that TKD, Aikido & Karate which is good? Maybe go Shaolin Temple is the best choice. Does Singapore have Shaolin Temple?
Hi, if you r interested to let your child learn defensive skills, there is also martial arts like wushu, training in northern & southern styles, which partly originated from shaolin kungfu.
I have been training in this wushu for many years, also been helping to coach young children. Kindly PM me if you need more details, or check out this thread http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10271 on wushu lessons. -
my P1 child started lessons at hyun taekwondo school. gained more confidence from it. also, lots of running, kicking and punching…so she lost a considerable weight for one hour, two times a week schedule.
i think they also have classes for younger kids starting from 3 yrs. -
Hi cloud7,
Can share how yr gal learn TKD in Hyun Academy? Where is it located by the way? -
my child took just a month or so lessons (twice a week) from this academy. we love this school as it seems to make learning taekwondo in a fun way. unfortunately, my gal needs to go back to swim class for health reasons so needed to give up taekwondo for now.
the school is at prinsep st., just across lasalle college of the arts.

There is a new TKD school at Bukit Timah Plaza and they have children's class from 3 yrs.
Can care to share the TKD your child had with JH Kim? I'm trying to put both kid (Age 4 & 7) to learn TKD either in TKD schools or CC. I notice some CC don't accept small age like age 4.learningtobekiasu:
they have a branch in katong. give them a call. its great if your kid takes an interest. my son has been in JH Kim since he was 4.5 or 5. he will be getting his red belt this month and probably black by mid year. it has done wonders for his fitness and confidence levels. -

Our principal, Master Eom Seoungsoo, has more than 25 years of experience as Taekwondo practitioner in Korea before he came to Singapore. He has a degree in Taekwondo and Physical Education from the prestigious Kyung Hee University in Korea, and holds a Kukkiwon*-certified Black Belt 6th dan in Taekwondo and a Black Belt 2nd Dan in Judo.
Mater Eom represented Kyung Hee University in numerous national and inter-varsity competitions and was a member of the Kyung Hee Demonstration Team. Kyung Hee University is a well-known in South Korea as having one of the oldest and finest Taekwondo departments in the world.
Prior to coming to Singapore, Master Eom ran his own Taekwondo school in Metropolitan Seoul area.
Known as a passionate and patient educator, Master Eom personally overseas all classes.
Seem like the Principal came out from JH kim Taekwondo Institute from the Katong Branch. Can check as follow:

My son goes to Induk at Mountbatten. He likes it there. The teachers are attentive and the premises are new.

word of advice. check with singapore tkd federation if the school(s) you pick are affiliated with them - there have been several cases of kids not being able to grade for official STF/WTF belts because their schools were not members of STF.

[quote=\"heutistmeintag\"]Thanks for the info, I will keep that in mind. Hmm, I stay in the east and hence would prefer one eastside to reduce a amount of travelling. Petrol is so expensive thiese days.

JH Kim organizers grading at their own premises every 3 months, hence kids tend to grade up faster than places like CC clubs (my own opinion, not based on any statistics). on the flip side, they are a little more costly then most other clubs. -
