All About Flashcards

Jazz,
I PM you already. Hope that helps! Again, dont give up!
GD first lesson before you flashcards is ‘RESPECT your child’
Trust that all our kids are geniuses so dont ever think ’ is he/she learning?’ while flashing…
I started not knowing if all will work but i relaxed and make flashing session fun and like a game because I WANT TO NURTURE HER LOVE FOR LEARNING! and it showed now…
Yes, My gal can even recite San Zhi Jing already although she now only can say out the last word of every phrase but thats a start!
I hope my notes really encourage more parents to do the same for their kids… Then our kids will all have a better place to live in next time! They will be smarter to make our dying earth a better place for them to live in!
Thanks mummies and daddies ! -
hi parents,
Just want to gather some feedback on what would be the ideal flashcards in terms of
1. Size
2. paper
3. font size
4. affordability
5. categories including whole words? GD doesnt really hhave whole words
6. encyclopedic knowledge categories important? Do you think information on the cards or just words and photo is more important?
Personally, I have not found the perfect flashcards around. The best one i found was I can read chinese flashcards but the vocab is not enough.
GD’s flashcards doesnt have pictures and its all American English (i.e. Instead of circle, its round). GD’s comprehensive vocab but it doesnt really serve any purpose if we cannot help the child relate to the words.
the encyclopedic cards frm GD is great but its too big and difficult to flash. Same goes to the English or chinese flashcards. Paper is not easy to flash too, must put tape ! -

Thanks vvlim,1. How to order (A group of Shichida parents used to order together):
Hiap Moh
Call Bukit Merah Office (6273-5333), look for Lay Choo.
Item code: F405-303 (C2S Matt Invercote Creato, cut into A5 size). It was $66 for 1800 A5 size sheets.
Collection is at their factory at 101 Neythal Road.
2. My flashcards style is:
\tCategory Words
\tWord
\tpicture (that discribes the word)
ps:
The category and words in Arial bold, size 140-240 depends, must be in red color like GD style. Clear or no picture background for catergory & words)
I can send u a sample through mail for Buildings topic which i downloaded and amended according to my style.
3. How to print:
My printer is Epson Stylus CX5900. Will let the above paper print directly. From my powerpoint, page original size is A4, just select reduce size to A5 and click print.
\t
3. Encyclopedic knowledge categories to me is just an explosure. Haven touch the topics yet. Most important is my girls likes to learn new things.
4. Both information on the cards and the words is important.
Today, i tried to flash things that she knows with the intention to teach her to regornise words, she gave me face like \"mummy, i already know\" and after 2-3 cards from the set she dun wanna see. Then, I tried new cards topic about Clinic, she opened her eyes wide wide, 100% concentrate and ask me to flash 3 times!
ps:
My girl likes to see GD words card only before 8th months old. Due to working + last term pregnancy and later the arrival of my second girl, there was no consistancy in flashing cards hha..So, my GD cards...still ya on & off will try.
ya, baby/toddler likes to learn new things
...and due to my broken English, any new words that i am not sure how to pronounce will always check from
http://www.thefreedictionary.com
yeah, i heard about Hiap Moh but didnt do anything coz I can print and laminate myself.
anyway I think that since we want the kids to know the words and its meaning, we can at the same time just han tam some encyclopedic information to them!
I tried again to flash to my 19 mth old hyper active gal yday and she prefer that I flash as per my old session
1. GD english
2. I can read Chinese
3. 1 set encyclopedic cards like inventors
4. I can read English
5. 1 more set encyclopedic cards like famous composers or flags
6. GD chinese
7. GD maths
What amazes me is that she look forward to the encyclopedic cards maybe because its random and now she can reads out loud the last name of the those inventors..
After the session, she insist we play the 'who' game.. As in i place 2-3 photos on the floor and ask her who invented the telephone or who is thomas edison..For over 1 yr old, i think we must crack our brains to make them interested!!!
For the language, its seems some words she already know! She will finish the word for me! AIYOOO!!!!
Anyway, like i said, for example, Flash 5 words then turn over flash the picture (saying the word) then next session, flash the words then turn over flash the photo but this time, give information like the sum of the square is 360degrees. That saves us alot of time i hope..
I can see this works coz it makes the kid interested.
Vvlim, thank you for your reply..
I always appreciate all the responses from parents.. then I feel comforted that I am not alone facing the problems or hurdles I have with parenting!
Keep in touch..
I am now doing some flashcards but gathering the correct information is not fast job for a full time working mum! But i try my best... just need sleep!!! -

No la.. dont say that. I think all mummies are the greatest! This morning I heard this trailer on Class 95fm on saluting women.. And boy, I was feeling rather proud being a women but i think the best part is being a mother! We mummies are always the one planning and thinking for our kids. Like ourselves, who do we turn to when we become mothers? OUR MOTHERS of course! Sadly not all have the luxury of having their mums so I guess we must ensure our kids grow up useful so they can in turn help others in future..hi quixation,
You're such an inspiration, you know...when i just no need to wake up 2-4 times for 2 babies in the mid-night. (insisted not let my helper to help when nite time even daytime i have to work. My hubby was trying to ask me to dispatch 2-3 days in a week to the helper.)
i think we and many mummies share the same kinds of sentiment. When flashing, i see her eyes like a blank paper, fully trust on me. i see her eyes so urge to acquire new knowledge....All will drive me on or put me on guilty when not making new flash cards.
yea, try my best now, ehhe will start to \"shop\" for some encyclopedic info...(ya...will go flip a bit How To Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge book by GD tx tx)
Have a nice day
you have been a great mummy too! Salute la!
I try send you some stuff when i finish with the flashcards. -

thanks for sharing.
Am not sure how this firstwords works but nearer to home, there is the Brillkids software which you can also import other playlist made by parents all over the world. There is thousands of categories and words to choose from and you can record your own voice and decide the play mode. I have this software too and uses the photos or ideas from other parents to flash to my gal. I only use the pc flashing once a week just to expose her to different media. But the only thing it's lacking is being able to burn the projects into VCD or DVD so that grandparents and helpers can show them in the day.
The contents are excellent, good for a full time working mum like me.
However, I still find the conventional way better because there is
1. More interaction between my child and myself.
2. We control the session like games before each session so she knows its fun to see flashcards
3. Our voices tend to be more personal than pre-recorded
4. We can change the words or revision anyhow and anytime according to the child's needs.
5. No radiation
6. Dont want to expose them to much to computer YET. hahaha..
But a mixture of different media complements each other if done in the right way. I flash cards to my gal when i am at home. During the day, she watches wink to learn DVD or Your baby can read VCD as revision. I realised she picks up the word and meaning faster. I also try to speak to her about the words we flashed when we play.
There is also a mini Doodle Pro that we have in the car and sometimes I use that to revise the words or just let her draw. Its small enough for any bag. Example, during dinner and when she is getting bored, I took the Doodle pro out and start writing the words like MEAT, FISH, VEGETABLES, SPOON, etc etc as revision. Of course, we made things fun too. I draw a plate and ask her to scribble on it like the noodle she sees on the table or the hair on someone's head..(idea taken from Kumon first steps books)
Hence, I guess its the whole approach! But if what you are doing works on your kid, then continue your good work!
Good luck! -
Thanks for the heads - up on Brillkids. Almost similar function to what I have for pixelflash. Cost wise, a bit steep compared to what I got for pixelflash.
Maybe can try out a demo. -
there is a brill kids Reader Lite thats free to download.
