Thanks mumoftwo. Not an easy decision because the two schools are so different. IP vs non-IP, co-ed vs all-girls, HMT vs non-HMT. Also, NJC requires the students to stay at the hostel for a few months every year I think. That discouraged some of my friends from letting their dd apply for NJC because they were uncomfortable with the idea of having their young girls stay at the hostel with older boys, even though accomodations are separate.
Hi Turquoise,
Yes, it is not an easy decision esp on the boarding programme. This was one of the major topics we discussed before we decided to let her apply for DSA at NJC. My daughter's reasoning is that she is very protected, compared to majority of her friends in school. She said that we allowed her to take public bus on her own after school during 2nd half of pr 5, long after she asked us to let her to take the public bus on her own, and that is only after my husband took her on a familiarisation trip twice, plus it was only for a few times after cca. She feels that with all our overwhelming love and protective instincts, she is missing out on experiences that can shape her to be independent. She feels that she needs to experience the boarding programme as she thinks it will help us (the parents) to slowly \"let go\" and for her to slowly learn. She said, no offence mummy, but I think this is good for us. Whew! I thought about what she said and I do agree she does have a point. Until today I still send and pick her from school, and practically everywhere else. It is hard for me, and she knows it. It will be a big adjustment for us.

        Hi mumoftwo,

Your daughter sounds very mature. It's great that she wants to experience independence. Did your daughter visit both NJC and MGS during their Open Houses? For us, the vibes from the students, teachers , principal and environment, as well as the school culture we experienced helped my dd and us in selecting our preferred school. There were schools my dd was keen on then changed her mind after visiting the school and listening to the talks. Similarly there were schools we considered more favourably after.

        Good luck in your decision!

Yes, we visited NJC together as she is very keen to go there. We went to RGS and SCGS open house but she is not keen about the school. As for MGS, she did not go but will go for the tea session organised by the school for all students who are succesful in DSA SBC. I guess will have to see how she responds to the teachers, students and environment.

Thanks for your support and have a nice day.

            MdmKS:
CSC, do you know if the IP schools do the same? Whether students (whether CL or HCL) at IP school take 'O' MT at sec 3?

            MdmKS,

From what I know, most IP schools require their students to take 'O' MT exam at sec 3 and HCL exam at sec 4 - if the student is taking HMT. Not sure about those who just take MT alone. 😄

Will the other pupils who aren’t a Christian be biased against my daughter due to the fact that she isn’t a Christian?

                    Haiz…

She wanted to go to MGS at first because she felt that the school was really beautiful. However, my husband objected due to the fact that MGS was a christian school and he felt that the students over there would be biased against her, thus she was forced to give up on MGS. She is currently now studying in SCGS.

My dd is in MGS SBC program, she doesnt think that people are biased against non-Christians. Biasness or Discrimination is not one of Christian’s teaching.

My hubby and I like MGS for its culture and well-rounded education. My dd qualifies for RGS but we discouraged her from choosing it due to my bad experience with the school during the DSA. Some parents may say we are stupid, but I think education is not all about scoring As, you need to balance, character building is important too. I’m not saying that RGS does not have character building programs (i’m not sure) but I have very bad experience during the DSA which forms my opinion about the culture there (I’m not sharing). I do not want my daughter to grow up in these sorts of environment and thinking that it is fine. (Btw, my daughter was from RGPS)
