Victoria School
-
Just to share: there will be a once-every-four-years event in 2015 called Victorian Challenge some time in the middle of the year, which is a 24-hour overnight challenge for each class to do something really big. Do look out for it!

I suggest waiting for your DS to be assigned to his sports house first as each house has it's own colour. It is worn on annual sports days. I think there was one whole term when DS had to wear the tank top for PE. Not sure if it depends on the preference of the teacher.
Behaviour is top-notch. The school has in place good control measures as rainbowie has pointed out. Being a boys' school and a school with a strong uniformed group (UG) culture, you can expect some UG influences.Thinkerrrr:
Hi,
Does anyone know if it is necessary to buy the VS tank top? There are a few colours available. DS is not quite used to the tank top.
I've heard many good things about VS boys' behaviour but was wondering if things are regimented there. I wouldn't mind it, but will need to prepare DS for it.
:thankyou: -

Thank you, rainbowie and dadmum123. I will follow your suggestions and put off buying the VS tank top for now. DS is relieved.
My ds did not buy the VS tank top and it wasn't needed for PE. Not sure if it is meant for sportsman.
Heard from reliable sources that a S1 boy was suspended from school for 3 days this year when he was caught hurling vulgarities while another was also suspended for calling his classmates gay and was being reported to the discipline master by one of the 'victims'.
My ds said they had been briefed on the \"dos and don'ts\" during their briefing with teachers on the reporting day.
Wow rainbowie thanks for the heads up on the expectations. Will ask DS to take note of the \"dos and don'ts\".
Any one has any opinions on UGs in VS? -
My ds is in Sec 1 this year and I’ll like to share some info & tips on VS:
IMO, the UGs are very ‘loyal’ to their individual group. If your ds knows of any UG senior in VS, he is bound to be ‘earnestly jio’ by him to join his UG.
Scouts & Boys’ Brigade have their cca on Sat so they are usually free from cca on weekdays.
My ds did not get the House tank top too as he did not compete in any sports during his first sports day.
He particularly enjoys those PE sessions and the cross country event held in East Coast Park which is just across the highway.
VS building comprises of 7 storeys and the boys are not allowed to use lifts.
The parade square is on the 5th storey. I find that my ds has grown physically stronger after spending a year there.
There will be 4 CA/SA. Except for EOY (end-of-year) exam results that will have hardcopy in report book, all the other results (incl EOY) will be displayed online in vs.ntrix.sg for parents/pupils to view. Login password will be the parents’ IC. It will also show the average performance of the cohort.
There are many VS past year exam papers in ‘lms.asknlearn’ which can be downloaded for self-practise.
VS has taught my ds to be a better person. When he was asked to take up a task by his FT, which he would normally reject during his primary school days, I overheard him telling his friend ‘I can’t reject the mission as I must have the Victorian spirit’. Thumbs up! -

You are most welcome, Thinkerrr. And a warm welcome to your ds into the Victorian family. :rahrah:
Wow rainbowie thanks for the heads up on the expectations. Will ask DS to take note of the \"dos and don'ts\".
Can't agree more with Sieg. :salute:
In addition, most communications between parents & teachers are via sms & emails. Other info may be found in school's portals. You may need a printer to print timetable, consent forms, additional practice papers, booklist( 2nd year onwards), etc. -
Ds has gotten his 2015 timetable.
This year, they will report to school at 8.25am on every Thursday, which is something new! -
Thank you Sieg and Rainbowie! Very glad to meet other parents of Victorians.
DS is thinking of joining a UG but doesn't know what to expect. Scouts and Boys Brigade seem like good alternative to the NCC brand. Though it also means spending 6 days out of 7 in school.
It looks like the tank top is not needed for now. Thanks for the heads up. I heard about the East Coast Park PE lessons too, and I think the boys are really privileged.
Thanks for the information on the online portals and databases as well. Will be much needed! Good to hear about the 8.25am start.
It's interesting how the school can bring together boys of different backgrounds and personalities, and create such a strong school culture. I'm not sure what \"Victorian spirit\" means now, but I'm excited to see what DS develops into. Have a good school year, fellow parents!

Good first day today! So proud to see DS with the other boys in their new yellow tees.

Hi Thinkerrr. Very glad to 'meet' you too. :hi5:
You or/and your ds can find out more about the Boys' Brigade UG or others during the CCA fare which should be coming soon.
I am sure your ds will enjoy his time in VS and feel real proud to be a Victorian. :imcool: -
For last year, if a S1 pupil (O level track) scored an overall average of below 65%, his parent will need to meet up with the FT on the last day of school.
So please remind you ds to work hard!
