llbros545 : Will students get to learn Math Olympiad like in primary school? Is it based on voluntarily basis or teacher’s selection?

Yes, all students are given the option of taking part in SMO and attending the SMO training sessions. However, I remember the teacher having a list of students recommended to participate in the SMO. I am also not sure if there is a cap on the amount of students that can take part. On the other hand, participation in Science Olympiads are based fully on grounds of merit.

Didn't know they put subject strength in same class, I will double check with DS. DS told me they kind of mix the student as his P6 friends with about same T-Score all over different classes. Even his class also have large range of T-Score.

But I am quote sure there will be a musical chair when S2 go to S3.

I can tell you it is a different ball game in S1, can throw away the T-Score. Most score will drop and slowly improve year end or some earlier. DS say many higher T-Score non CHS Pri boys even fail exam.

DS Maths and Science, I am quite happy. His other non maths/science subjects, I am not so happy.

Oh, your DS is S1-7 in 2012, did he get A* for Science?

          DS is S1-7 in 2011. S2-7 in 2012.

          Your DS which class?

I understand that those who are in the DSA or sports CCA can choose to be in the sports class. They will play the respective sports during PE period, and their curriculum is slightly different from the mainstream class. This arrangement is also to allow remedial class to be conducted should the student missed the class during competition period. Anyone has DS in this sports class? How is it compared to the normal class?

No, not everyone in Sport CCAs are offered a place in the Sports Class. Only those high-ability students who performed well during the CCA trials or those who DSAed in via sports are entitled. Yes, the curriculum is slightly different. Students in the sports class have to come to school at pretty unearthly hours, in my opinion, to have morning training sessions. Most times, they will also not partake in morning assembly with the rest of the school. After the intensive morning training sessions, they will then return to classes for lessons as per normal. Training then resumes in the afternoons. From what I see, the average school day for a Sports Class student is usually longer than one in the mainstream.

llbros545 : Do you think MEP students can cope with CCA and Math Olympiad or Science Olympiad involvement?

Also, do sec 1s have CA1 in Feb?

They do not call it CA1, SA1, CA2, SA2 anymore.

It is call MR, mastery review (or something). I think is MR1, MR2, MR3, MR4 something, they also have class MR something like class test. All adds up.

Some subjects they do all within 1st half of the year and the rest of the subjects the 2nd half of the year.

Quite different from other school and also other IP school.

Be prepared to get a little confused, although I follow DS work closely from P3 to P6, but for Sec 1 I am still confused. 😂

Don't worry, they are likely do not do well in earlier class tests, \"CA1\", \"SA1\", hopefully will pick up after that.

Some boys from other school, those with high T-Score can even fail their papers or get very low marks, so if your DS say he is lucky to pass and many in his class fail, it probably is true. How I know? Go school kaypo and ask other parents and compare lah!!!

But on the other spectrum, there is also 1 kid who score 100 for the first 3 MR and 99 the final MR for Maths, really respect. Maths is the only subject where perfect score is possible. They classified each subject into 4 bands (Band A, B, C, D with Band A the best), even like A1 (80+) in Maths can land you into Band C. A2 in Science is in Band B.

So be prepared, stay calm, welcome to CHS.

Some other schools are similar too, I'd think. My elder boy does some subjects in some terms only. Woe to the terms when he has \"Art\" as a subject bc his GPA would go down. LOL. Somehow he does badly in art.

CandyHeart: Although I myself am not in MEP, I am pretty sure one can cope with both MEP and Olympiad involvement, along with the mandatory CCAs. MEP replaces subjects that do not carry weight in the assessment such as DNT and Home Econs. Whilst MEP students will have their fair share of assignments, they will be spared the burden of completing DNT and Home Econs projects. So there’s quite a balance there. Furthermore, CCA is something every students has to cope with. For MEP students, they will most likely join aesthetics CCAs which are indeed very time-consuming and have many practice sessions, especially during SYF periods. For such, it’s up to the individual, really, to manage his time wisely and in the most appropriate fashion, so as to juggle between his various commitments. If you take part in Olympiads, you will have Olympiad preparatory classes. For SMO, it is during Maths period. For Science ones, it is after classes.
