Science test don't need calculator but maths need!!
why do you say RI will test him on math when you said he applied under science domain ?Ms tay:
My son apply for science domain. he scored 99 marks for p5 maths , but he only scored 85marks for p6 sa1 (he is from neighborhood sch).he did not get any reward for maths. I think he is not very stable for math .Im so worry that ri will test him on maths .

you missed the point i mentioned : this DSA subject domain test is super tough, beyond any level a Pri 6 student could imagine. I guess probably there are areas in the science test that a calculator could help save time. they are not going to test you on basic theory and basic computation. it is taken / assumed the kids are well versed in those computation, hence just use the calculator to get the answer. important thing is to know the theory and application, and know how to get the answer; they don't care whether you use manual computation or by calculator. you lose time by being manual. -

My Ds (P5) went for RI Science competition recently, & about 3/4 of the questions come from lower sec syllabus & 1/4 from \"O\" level. There're formula for lower sec science under Physics category. If your Ds test include lower sec syllabus, then he will need calculator. -

Ya why no interview huh and can get co Liao ... Not fair le ... Heheee
Though there was no interview for main streamers, it is extremely difficult for these kids to get CO from RI. For RI DSA, 2nd round domain specific selection test is super tough. Like this year, in 2010, RI had set aside 2 days for the selection test. DS attended one of the days, I did a quick count, there were less than 60 kids, shortlisted for all 4 subject domains. If you take the law of average, this means that, over 2 days, about only 120 main streamers were shortlisted for 2nd round. Probably less than 10% out of those who took the GAT. Out of these 120 kids, very few main streamers eventually made it to RI via academic DSA.
I agreed, the domain selection test is very competitive. DVL's statistics was right. My DS told me that if he has a choice, he would take the interview rather than the test. My observation last year was that Math domain has the longest queue during the registration. -

Calculators will be needed for Physics questions. -

IMHO, not matter what tests the students go through, would be a very tough test paper, would be a very tough situational test but should round up the selection process with an interview. I have come across many students who are very, very good or very gifted, would be in language, maths or science but he/she does just does not have the heart and they are arrogance and lack of integrity and humility. To me, He/she might not be suitable to award a CO to the top school.
Those students admitted to the top schools are potential future leaders. Especially for RI/HCI. They need to have the heart and the right attitude.
You might not agree with me. It is just my 2 cents opinion.
