There is a separate thread on RGS vs NYGH in this forum. I am an ex-RGS/RJC mummy. DD went for both RGS & NYGH open house last year. DH & DD didn't like the RGS talk (too much emphasis on excellence but little to no emphasis on character dev & values). I was more partial to Rafflesian heritage of course. Anyway DD eventually didn't apply for RGS & is very happy now in NYGH. I have met the principal during the interview. Mdm Heng is direct, firm, very balanced in her views & comments, yet warm & puts both DD & I at ease. What I like in particular is she didn't put down other schools, but let the facts speak for themselves. DD has been in NYGH for almost a year. Absolutely no regrets ...and that's coming from a true-blue Rafflesian.....

Yes HMT is compulsory in NYGH. DD told me there are girls who only took MT in primary school and is still doing well in HMT. As to promotion criteria, I believe the girls need MSG of at least 3 to be promoted to the next level, but I need to check this out. NYGH has block tests to assess the girls over and above the exams to ‘catch’ the problem before the actual exams. As in any good school, NYGH is serious about academics. Those who don’t meet the MSG criteria are not allowed to train for their CCA, or at least have to turn up but gets academic coaching from seniors during CCA hours. This is to encourage the girls to study hard. I like this as it shows the school cares for the girls. At the end of the day, the girls are students first. It is no point promoting them indiscriminately whilst they bring CCA medals and glory to the school, but eventually suffer as they still have to take A levels in year 6!

As to girls transferring to other schools, it happens of course. I think the parents know the child best. Some cope well in IP schools, some don’t. Some mature faster, some (especially the boys) mature at a much later age. For those who need more handholding, an ‘O’ level track is more prudent. Let the child have the time and space to mature, excel in ‘O’ level, and then have the confidence to proceed to ‘A’ levels. I know of several very good students who choose non-IP schools even though their PSLE scores can get them into any school of their choice.

What is the chance for my DS that he gets a CO for RI, if he has not got the letter yet? He got quiet low for his GEP overall score, around 73%.

Like Gleemom, my daughter is also in Sec 1 NYGH this year (Hi Gleemom, we talked on this forum last year if you remember....)


Like what Gleemom has shared, I have no regrets about choosing NYGH. My girl came in via CCA DSA and my husband and I found that NYGH provides fantastic support to this bunch of girls. They keep a close eye on them to make sure they are on par with the rest and if any is found to be falling behind, a remedial is organized for them.

We are glad to have our daughter in NYGH, the support system has been excellent !

I haven't heard of Mdm Heng before this and now that we have met her , I find her a truly outstanding and charismatic principal.
I have also met the RGS principal during the Open House talk. She is, no doubt, also very capable but strikes me as a very business like lady with none of Mdm Heng's warmth and personality. I just feel more comfortable leaving my DD in Mdm Heng's hands.

yes.......no doubt she looks confident and capable but gave me a very business-like nature.....
(heard that she was fr harvard uni but not an ex-rgs)
and the whole talk seemed to me .......
over-emphasized of \"we being the best\" ...and \"we are the excellent\" kinda of feel.......
uneasy and uncomfortable with such feel....

whether it is over generalisation or not.....
but if u were to hear the same, similar old stories of what u had already heard…..
especially if some were from the mouths of parents of R girls…..
wouldn't it warrants a much deeper thought to it and to find out more.....

I remember HCI conducted a symposium on life in HCI towards the end of Oct last year. As for RI, I only remember attending something on choosing CCAs after school has started.
