DSA 2011

Dear Funx3 and cindylauper
Many thanks for well wishes and encouragement. Yes we should all encourage our DS and DD that the most important thing now is to focus and concentrate on their revision and aim to do their best in PSLE. DSA is just one of the many steps in their education journey and we should encourage them to learn from the positive lessons Out of the unsuccessful attempts - experience from the interviews, GATs, etc. For my DS, I think it is a good lesson to learn how to accept disappointments and pick up and move on. All the best to all DS and DD for the listening compre on 16 sep, written papers on 29 sep to 5 Oct. GB -
Funx3:
That \"4 points\" is just some figure I plucked out lah. I don't know how many \"bonus\" points it. I just know there were. It's either that or they would also just take in if they were national sportspersons no matter what points they got. I remember a national swimmer in my year who had like 17 points when everyone got into the JC with less than 10 points. He was ex-RI. (all the RI & RGS students had extra bonus 2 points). We had some who got in with extra bonus in my class I think, also national player plus ex-RI but in the end did quite well for A-levels and did courses like dentistry and medicine. Anyway, during our time, those who got in medicine were not exactly perfect scorers.
\"national sportsman - minus 4 points\"phankao:
They should just abolish DSA and give GEPers an extra bonus points over their PSLE score (like what they do for HMT). I remember that for entry to JC last time, it was that way. eg. affiliated school - minus 2 points, national sportsman - minus 4 points, or something like that.
Really Got such Scheme last Time?
How Long Ago was it? -
CSN:
Hi CSN,Dear Parents who are still waiting for NJC's letters
It means bad news if u have not received any letter by now. DH called NJC on Thursday and was told letters posted to successful ones on Wed and they will post unsuccessful ones only next week. It's bad news for DS as NJC is only remaining hope. So got to really \"chiong\" for PSLE. Given his very weak Chinese, slim chance to get to his dream school. Will try our best and commit the rest to God. God bless. A very worried mum.
Hopefully it's just postal delay with all the holidays recently.
Regardless of the DSA outcome, I'm sure it was a learning experience for your DS.
Wish your DS all the best with his PSLE and hopefully, he'll get into his dream sch. :xedfingers: -
Blur Dad:
No zero points now lah. - but only up to Maximum of 4 points allowed.
I think there is some \"extra bonus\" points for those in Sec 4 taking \"o\" level now. There's why someone need almost \"Zero\" point to get into the top JC. Maybe some \"senor\" here would elaborate more.
Would suggest this to MOE to apply this to PSLE. If not why students want to spent time in CCA, SMOPS, GEP, etc...So the PSLE result not only depend on the exams paper.
For O-levels to JC:
http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/jae/faqs/#bonus-pt
CCA grades (Distinction) - bonus 2 points
HMT (C6 and above) - bonus 2 points
Affiliated sec school - bonus 2 points

This is a good problem to have. I was previously in the same situation. Only DSAed for these two schools as we prefer a mixed school for my shy DS.my first post here.
I have headache due to DS getting CO from NUSH and DHS,any suggestions? :?
Eventually, we chose DHS because of
1. Distance from home
2. NUSH time-table may have long breaks between subject period which we do not like.
3. NUSH focuses on Math & Science. In fact, in DHS, DS does better in Humanities.
Talk to your child and list down pros and cons. Well, both are good schools. -
Publica:
Hi Publica,jtoh:
Publica, good luck on on your son receiving his CO. :xedfingers:
Thanks jtoh for your well wishes. This DSA exercise has been a very good learning experience for my son. We embarked this journey with an open mind and only wanted him to have no regrets whatever the outcome since he has tried his best.
We are ready to move on and work towards PSLE.
:goodpost: There's the spirit...As long as your DS has tried his best, there''ll be no regrets!
Focus on PSLE now & I'm sure your DS will get into his dream sch. Jia You! :rahrah: -
suecat:
Hi suecat,After all the excitement of waiting and going down to open the mailbox umpteen times, it s really a big disappointment to hear abt the rejected not getting notified on the same date as those who were successful. But remembered 1 parent from the year before said that her ds s classmates received co, wl and rejects all on the same day. If only njc informed us that they will send out successful letters 1st then it can at least spare us the agony and waiting . This weekend is ESP a long one and dd only applied for this school as it s her dream school for the longest time .
She didn't do very well for her prelims so was banging on her to get through this dsa so that we don't get heart attack after psle result. But alas , it was not to be ..... :gloomy:
Don't be too disheartened. Hopefully, the prelims will spur your DD on to excel in her PSLE. All the best to your DD and hope she gets into her dream sch. Jia You! :rahrah: -

:congrats: 1248 on your DS's double CO. Both are good schs so a lot depends on the distance, the sch cultures & programmes offered. All the best!my first post here.

The two schools are very different. One's SAP while the other is modular and Math/Science focused. Is your ds very passionate about Math and Science? If he enjoys a good challenge in Math and Science, and wants to do an accelerated course in it, then NUSH might be a better choice for him. If he's undecided and thinks that he might want to pursue more humanities, than DHS might be more appropriate. I'm not sure if DHS offers bicultural studies. Also, you might want to consider the school culture and CCAs. If you've attended the Open Houses you would have a better idea of what each school's ambience is like. Which school offers more opportunities to your son in terms of academic flexibility, advancement, overseas trips, competitions, CCA competitions, leadership opportunities etc.my first post here.
