RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Hi Autolycus, Many thanks for sharing and your advice.
Was hoping I can take a more hands-off approach in sec sch but think will still have to remind and nudge a fair bit to ensure it does not deteriorate into a \"bad slack\". Once again, much appreciated. :thankyou: -
RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Haha, when I asked my boy recently what is it that he likes about the school, he told me that he likes it because his general feeling is that a lot of the students (he did not say teachers) are slackers like him and he simply loves it! On a serious note, I am really getting worried  as I was hoping he could be surrounded by the more diligent ones to have some positive influence so I cannot place too much hope in that? Are the ones in the \"O\" level track a lot more \"slack\" than the IB track? That seems to be what I hear from other parents. Autolycus, would appreciate your sharing given your initmate knowledge of the school and its ethos. Thanks.

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Understand from son that Scouts starting this Friday. Not too sure if all UG starts on the same day.
What about appealing to Sports? Appeal is to individual coach or Mr Chan Chee Wei too? Thanks -
RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Autolycus and Mandarin, many thanks for your sharing. Haha, my DS slacks while not focussing in his work and as a result cannot finish his work in an efficient manner. In pri sch days, it's so common to see him taking 2 or even up to 3 hours to finish a piece of work that should have taken not > 1 hour. Up until today, still have to nag him to finish homework without being distracted by TV/YouTube (yes given homework on 1st day), pack his bag without leaving pieces behind for someone else pick up after him, etc. :slapshead: Wanted very much to just leave it to see how he would handle.... looking forward to the training he will get at sch to develop him into one who can slack because he has focussed and finished his work efficiently
not because he is not focussed and slacks and takes longer than necessary. Cheers -
RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Not too sure if any parent or may Autolycus can advise. Why must sports CCA be only for the obj of competition which then means a min of 3x/4x weekly training? It makes it so difficult for parents like us who would like our DS to do sports but just do not think he can cope with 4x training weekly plus Uniform Group CCA. To start with, these kids need to learn how to handle 8 subjects and I personally do not think a typical boy like ours (no time management skills) will be able to manage 8 subjects, train 4x in sports, and attend Uniform CCA. Think Mandarin has shared that her DS somehow manage after 3 years in canoeing. Can Mandarin please elaborate further how your DS manage 4x training plus uniform group and can still find time to complete assignments, do revision, and prepare for exams? By the way, do all these intensive weekly sports CCA stop say x weeks before a major exam such as SA1 and SA2? Thanks.

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Ngbrdad, DS mentioned that he got selected for canoe and track & field too. However, he did not give his name to the canoe teachers after he heard that there are 4 training sessions weekly (DH is keen for DS to take up but DS is not). He also came back with a letter recommending him to take up track and field (3 training sessions weekly). It's quite unbelieving - I mentioned before that DS is just not a sporty person and he hates being under the sun (he rather spends his time reading a story book). Both DH and I will discuss with DS this weekend the choice of the second CCA - whether it is a sports or a club. This is really difficult - one on hand we like the idea of him being involved in more sports which will be good for his physical development and more importantly discipline. On the other hand, we are concerned that he is not going to be able to cope with so many training sessions. He is really not good at time management. Spoke briefly to a Teacher in the sch - he said the boys somehow will find a way to cope. Teacher's own son is in sec 1 this year and he is going to do canoe - follow footsteps of an elder brother who is in the ACSI canoe team. Teacher's comment is that he rather his son spends his time in sports than to sit in the air-con watching TV or playing computer games. Guess very few will disagree with him. This is really a tough choice..... Suggest all parents please check the sch website for the training schedule of the CCA your DS is interested. It does not mean that clubs and societies will be more relaxed. DS is also looking at chess and we noted there are 2 training sessions for chess weekly. One other parent whose son is in year 3 IB asked his son to join the CCAs that demand the least time - that boy is in basketball (was told by this parent that there is only 1 training weekly but the website says 2x) and NCDCC (Civil Defence). PSG facilitator advised that child should ensure he can at least score A1 or A2 for the core CCA and realistically, the child should only be able to spend time developing one core CCA and he is unlikely to have much time for a demanding second CCA. This is all I gathered on CCA today. Any other advices from other KSP parents? A lot of thinking to do this weekend.... :scratchhead:

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Hope those boys who are not feeling well will recover very soon so that they can go back to join in the orientation fun. Now I realise DS is not the only one complaining about tiredness. At first, I thot he was just being too soft as he is not the sporty type and dislikes physical activities and being under the sun. In fact, received a call from him at 1130am this morning that he had stomach pain and asked if he could go home. He explained they had some vigorous physical activities this morning and the pain started after that. My first reaction was he was trying to find an excuse to avoid further physical activities later today. After some investigation (talked to the PSL, School Nurse on the phone), I decided to let him rest in the sick bay for an hour or so before deciding whether I need to go and bring him home (the Sch Nurse explained they would not allow him to leave on his own in case he faints). He sms at about 1245pm to say that he was feeling better and would return to the activities. Am pretty proud of him for perservering. Yes, we need to let the boys grow and mature by letting go.......Counting on the sch to work with with parents to develop our boys into fine young gentlemen. Cheers.

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Good am. Thanks Ngbrdad for your quick reply. DS came back both days complaining he was tired. Guess it will take them a while to adjust to the more hectic sec sch life. Look forward to meeting some of you tomorrow in sch. Cheers.

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
Think can take 74 (from bus stop on the school side) to Dover MRT besides 166 and 14. DS takes 74 daily to go home and passes by Dover MRT.
Is it true that we still have to pay 2 monthsβ fees by cheque even though the GIRO form had been submitted on day 1?
Does anyone know what the Sports Bazaar is about? Are they supposed to decide and choose their 2 CCAs during the Sports Bazaar?
Thanks.
