DSA 2011

May I know are there any parents who received calls from HCI asking them to put HCI as first choice yesterday? I was just wondering whatโs the reason for calling the parents when theyโve already sent out emails and letters.

sports DSA to those popular IP schools are for those considered as national team / age group sportsmen/women, so no problem spotting them ..... they always top the competition at national level for their age groupHi, wow, over a 1000+ pages of discussion!
Am hoping to get some advices from the experienced parents here.
For those who have used or tried using DSA via SPORTS, may I find out more? How do your kids manage to balance between the trainings and schoolwork? When do you know that your kid could have that potential? I understand that it is not easy getting in via sports for DSA and not the best may get chosen, but is there a sports that would seem to be easier than the rest? -

hi jtoh & Pen88n ~ personally i think the math olympiads still DO carry a good weight when it comes to DSA. after all the whole point of the DSA is for some schools to sift out those Specific Talents that might not be able to get in if based on their PSLE T-scores alone.
I think nowadays the sec sch do not accept based on these Maths Olympiad awards anymore. This MO is more related to academic, and if it is academic, they might as well wait for your overall PSLE score. Afterall, they want someone outstanding in all subjects and not one subject only!jtoh:
Yes, me too. Used to be that SMOPS Platinum would be assured of a place in RI/HCI/NUSH. Then it became an offer by NUSH but rejected by RI. Now not even an offer by NUSH but possibly RI. Guess SMOPS is no longer the golden ticket and you have to get SMOJ.
and based on the fact that RI & RGS are developing classes such as Euler / Gaelileo / Raffles Academy, i would say that such talents are still very important to the schools.
i think maybe in those few cases you mentioned, some other important factors came into play. eg. perhaps the student is really not good in English and the school is concerned that he/she might not be able to cope with the school's overall cirriculum?
or it could be that the student displayed some aptitude / attitude traits during the interview that made the school thinks that he/she might have some difficulties fitting into the school's culture...

jmho ~ :)[/quote]Hi intermezzo,
Yes, I agree math olympiads do still have a role to play in DSA. After all, there is a specific DSA domain for Math to apply under for some schools. It's just that through the years, it's getting tougher and tougher to secure a DSA through Math as more and more students participate in MOs and go for coaching and get better at it. You are absolutely right about other factors such as personality, aptitude and attitude coming into play of course.
