2014 Sec 1 Discussions

Wah… I didn’t know that Spanish will now be offered as third language.
-
On the Reporting Day (23 December 2013), are these the things that will happen?
1. Submit Report Book
2. Purchase textbooks and School Uniforms
3. Make a decision whether or not want to take up Higher Mother Tongue
4. Collect Third Language Offer or Rejection Letter
5. Apply for MEP or AEP, if interested
Do I miss anything?
After 23 December, the kids do not need to go to school anymore until 2 January 2014, right? -

Hi Yesterday my DD brought Sec1 posting booklet and there is written about third language . Is it compulsory to take third language in sec school ? TIA
Only top 10% of the PSLE cohort can opt for 3rd language. -

Now we have to start thinking about third language and MEP, if DS is eligible and the school offers. I must start reading the third language thread... Hiaz... -

As long as your son gets 250 & above (top 10% of the PSLE cohort) he could opt for 3rd lang. All the best! -

Thank you. Maybe I should just wait until we know his t-score

Some of our kids have gone tuition or enrichment this past year or so, some have not. Regardless, moving on to sec school, do you
1) plan to let your child handle own work despite results, or
2) attend tuition in tandem to ease phasing over into sec, or
3) sign up tuition only after assessing the need after few months in sec?
DS isn't a heavily-tuitioned kid. The classes he had ever been on and off were mostly out of interest for the subject or when I felt I shortchanged him  .
I'm leaning towards option 1 but I'm not sure if it's wise since things aren't the same from our time.
Would like to hear your thoughts... -

all along, my dd haven't had tuition from p1-p6 ca1. when her results stagnated, she requested for extra help. so we scrambled for tutors. some helped, some didn't help much. well, that's water under the bridge. moving forward, her p6 tutors suggested letting her handle her sec 1 work herself as she's basically motivated and hardworking. so i'll take that advice and let it be. -

Mine would be Option 3. Option 1 is what we aim for but I don't think I will do nothing if I see he can't cope. I will give him 6 months before I make a decision whether he needs tuition or not. Some of our kids have gone tuition or enrichment this past year or so, some have not. I think can wait first… Some school dont even have textbooks or follow the normal syllabus, so might end up confusing the kids…
-
don't mean tuition now... Just thinking ahead for Jan.

I took option 1 initially... Do note that it will take some time to get used to as suddenly they are swarmed with many new subjects... heavy cca activities... independence.. etc.. My DS took 1 year. Sec 2 is better for him.. though I must admit I changed my approach to option 3 after having a good chat with him end Sec 1.
