Hello, I’m wondering if anyone could advise me. My girl in Sec 1 Express is doing well (A1) for all subjects except Chinese, which she has always been weak in. What’s the implications if I switch her to take Chinese Syllabus B instead, for her Sec 3 subject combination? She wishes to take Pure Biology in Sec. 3. Are students who take MT Syllabus B limited in the subjects that could take in Sec 3? Thanks in advance!

Hi. One, does her current school offer Chinese B? If not, may have to travel to another school or language centre for lessons, and not sure if this causes any timetable issues (in addition to hassle). If the current school offers, I am not aware of any limitations Chinese B automatically imposes but best to check with the school.

You may also want to see if Chinese B has any implications for whatever is planned after Secondary School. JC still need to take and pass Chinese B, not sure about other paths.

The thread below has some info on the different weightings of components for the different Chinese subjects. Also see if others chime in here. Good luck!

Just chipping in with my opinion here.

If she is scoring A1s for all her other subjects, is there a real need to downgrade her Chinese to Syllabus B?

Considering that for entry to JC, the L1R5 score does not need to count the Chinese grade at all. It will not drag down her total score. She just needs to pass it, the bare minimum to satisfy MOE pre-requisite for JC.

Unless her secondary school is gonna be counting her Chinese grade into their overall Sec 2 score, for selection into Sec 3 subject combis. This is a question that you need to ask her specific school. I highly doubt all schools include the MTL grade into their selection.

the purpose of doing Chinese B is usually to meet the minimum requirement of a pass in Chinese B for entry to JC as oppose to the minimum D7 (45%) for Express Chinese, there are people who would wait until Sec 4 then if still failing badly in Express Chinese (E8 40% and below) would consider taking Chinese B then, so I would think no hurry to make the decision that early to switch unless the school advises otherwise

Thanks for your helpful advice and info, SG_KP1, Zac’s mum and emoh. You’ve brought up valid points that I hadn’t considered. I’ll check with her form teacher for a better understanding and try to keep her where she is and increase her exposure to Chinese language 😃

                  Hi blissful mummy,

We seemed to have a common problem for Chinese with our girls. Higher Chinese has been pulling down my girl’s overall and she got F9 during mid year. What I did was to continue with her current Chinese tutor to help her 1 to 1 and engaged zoom Chinese group tuition with tuition centre for her. She managed to pull up the grade to an A for Sec 2 EOY which helped to pull up the overall for EOY.

I tried to introduce Chinese drama show like “延禧宫” Yanxi Palace and other Chinese shows to her on YouTube and we will watch together during school holidays. In addition, reading Chinese news and listening to Chinese news helps.

As your girl is only in Sec 1, there is time for you to work with her on her Chinese. Don’t give up! If your girl can get As for other subjects, I’m sure she can get A for Chinese too by Sec 2 EOY.

Simply believe that your girl will improve and can improve. It’s just so important. Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

In psychology, it’s called self-efficacy—the belief in your own ability to succeed.

If you believe you will reach your goals, you will; if you don’t, you won’t. You know you can do it, but you need to know it, too.

All the best to your girl’s Chinese.

blissful mommy is not the student learning Express Chinese. Is her daughter that is learning.

Apart from just paying $ to hire a tuition teacher to teach and support her daughter on a 1 to 1 basis, since attending group tuition can't help her daughter, something else is also essential.

In order for sembgal's suggestion to materialise, blissful mommy must not only adopt a positive image in her mind that her daughter can be an \"overcomer\" in Chinese, but blissful mommy herself, must also give lots of encouragement and affirmation to her daughter, for every single small byte-sized effort that her daughter put in, to learn Chinese.

This is going to be a long journey ahead, not an overnight 100 metre dash sprint. Learning Chinese language, is different from learning subjects like (Maths & Science). Learning Chinese is via, bit-by-bit slowly accumulation. That means, u dont just look at the single end point results alone only. Instead, focus on the entire \"journey\" itself. Many of us are often impatient in looking at the end results per say, as a quick fix, that often they have forgotten to take one step backwards and do some self reflection, to ask themselves this key question:-

\"During this entire journey, as a mother (parent), where am I, to help my daughter be confident, in learning a task ? What input did I chip in, to help her along the way? What role or support as a mom, am I helping her, as she is struggling through? \"

Hence, blissful mommy must persevere all the way, in terms of
                      (affirming + encouraging) her daughter,
apart from adopting this \"Yes, my daughter can overcome Chinese\" mindset attitude .

                      =================================

                      Blissful mommy,

It will also do u good,
if both ( u and your daughter) can
read up the topic on \"how to be an overcomer\" together, in your bonding of \"mother-daughter\" relationship.

With each byte sized improvement with an increase of 1 mark or 2 marks made in her Chinese essay zuowen written or Chinese Paper 2, remember to journal down, pen down her thoughts into a personal diary. As years go by, when your daughter grow up, in future should a similar challenge emerge, get her to read back her recorded journal (diary), how to be an overcomer, then strength will flow back into her.

Meanwhile, keep affirming her. Affirm, affirm, affirm ! Don't affirm her only if she make 10 marks improvement. No ! Even small byte sized 1 mark improvement, also affirm her. Because this is what every child needs, from their parents.

Everyone of us, must start somewhere, from some point in life, to learn to give affirmation when is due, even though being Asians, often we are less prone to doing this, compared to the Westerners.
