      Hi Mummies,

Anyone can advise for Sec 2 streaming if choose Triple Science instead of Double Science, considered risky as only got 1 combined humanities in Triple Science. This will affect the score for L1R5 right? Hence, to consider take Double Science instead? Thanks.

Yes, double science + double humanities is safer.

If choose triple science + 1 humanities, student will be forced to count that 1 humanities into the L1R5 score, no ifs and buts. The pressure to score well for that 1 humanities will then be sky high, especially if it makes or breaks the choice of JC they get.

            Yes, choose

( Double Science + Double Humanities ) Sec 3 subject combination, is safer.

            Eg.
If one is weak in Sec 2 Physics component inside your subject Sec 2 General Science,
            just drop Physics and
            take up
Double Science Upper Sec (Pure Bio + Pure Chem).

But, if one is weak in memory work. Eg.

weak in Sec 2 Bio component inside your subject Sec 2 General Science,
            just drop Bio &
            take up
Double Science Upper Sec (Pure Physics + Pure Chem)

Just want to add that nowadays, no student takes triple Science at JC because of the \"contrasting subject\" requirement.

                Thanks All for the advice.

I have told my girl about the risk of choosing Triple Science but she prefers Triple Science cos her reason is she do not want to take double Humanities. Although she is good in memorise as can score for History and Geography but she prefer History.

Feel double science more safer with 2 Humanities as back up too for the sake of scoring in L1R5. How to persuade her to change mind?

You can tell her my personal experience: excel in sciences but didnt like humanities. I chose triple science + pure geog (no SS during my days). Ended up B3 for the geog. Missed out on RJC by 1 point.

I actually think it depends on what the student wants.

One can end up with the same grade for both humanities subjects and if the student is not inclined, he may end up spending a lot more time for humanities and neglect the science (which he may be good at in sec 2, but not top student standard which means still need to put in effort)

What I am saying is this. If you take Science 1 and Science 2 and Hu 1 and Hu 2. You dont like Hu, and then you may end up with Hu 1 b4, Hu 2 also b4, and because you spent a lot more time managing your Hu, in the end you get Sc 1 A2 and Sc 2 b3. And your L1R5 becomes EL b3, EM a1, Sc a2, Hu b4, (AM b3, sc b3, MT b3, take any 2).

Vs if you have taken 3 Science and 1 Humanities, maybe you end up with a2, a2, b3 for the 3 Sc, and then b4 for Hu. And your L1R5 becomes EL b3, EM a1, Sc a2, Hu b4, (AM b3, sc a2, MT b3, take the a2 and b3)

Of course there can be all kinds of possibilities, what I am trying to say is, having another humanities may not always make it safer. You need to evaluate the 3rd science with the 2nd humanities subject. If no preference and equal flair in both the 3rd sc and the 2nd humanities, then take 2 humanities. If I even have problems deciding on your 2nd humanities, then I am definitely better off with just one. Bearing in mind combined humanities is already like 2 subjects.

This is the same as last time A levels, you only need 3 A level subjects, some take 4 because they like it, but some take 4 with the idea that they can pick the best 3 out of the 4, but then end up with A B C C . If he has taken 3 and have the mindset of “i need to use all 3”, he might end up with a b b.

                    It is anyone’s guess :siam:

We should respect the student’s choice.

Just throwing in another point for consideration. Using a “hedge” of “2 choose 1” compulsory subject in the L1R5 allows leeway for what-if the exam paper happens to be a killer paper that year (for that subject).

Good reply. I favour 2 Science plus 2 Humanities IF the student has no preference.

I think there are many valid reasons to take Triple Science. Doing so because everyone else is doing it or that's supposedly what smart people do aren't necessarily in that category. Perhaps the replies pushing a move away from 3x Science should be qualified with the above. In the end, interests and self-motivation trump all.

Nevertheless, I have thought it may be beneficial if a student can have one (full) humanities subject to stick with in upper sec and JC. Not that the content is cumulative but that you see where to improve, work on it etc. vs jumping around between the choices. But this is just a guess, as I don't know how it works in practice (and I'm sure some kids can pickup whatever in JC and do OK). Regardless, I guess Econ will be the default for many that didn't like whatever they took in upper sec.
