Why Study History?
Why Study Literature?
The Case for the Humanities -
Hi parents, would like to ask a question for my sec 2 DS who’s facing streaming this year.
Is it true that pure history has super huge amount of memorising work?
What about pure lit?
DS has been strong in history amongst all his humanities subjects, but I think he’s hearing from his seniors and teachers that upper sec pure history requires huge effort on memorising. So he’s thinking of taking SS+elect hist and pure literature. We are unsure as he had never done well in eng lit in lower sec…just passing only, so we are trying to persuade him to rethink cos we think his weak eng lit foundation will make it tough for him to cope with pure lit.
At least history is a strong subject for him, so we think even though it requires a lot of memory effort, but given his interest in history, it should at least make it a lesser pain than taking pure lit.
Appreciate if some of the parents here with upper sec kids can give me some advice based on your hindsight.
Thanks! -

Our school's upper secondary History curriculum: The world in crisis 1919-45 (The impact of WW1, The rise of the dictators, WW2 - causes & effects, Cold war), Understanding SEA 1900-independence (The Japanese in SEA, Colonialism in SEA, Rise of nationalism in SEA, Decolonisation & emergence of nation states)
How do I know if I should take History? (quoting from school handout)
Have an interest in the topic
Have an open mind
Be willing to work hard to master the content -
sky minecrafter:
son took elective history in upper sec...other than his interest in Japan, the rest of the topics were a torture.

this year really added A LOT OF OIL.
she cleared all her humanities subjects but flunked Math & Science.
hubby said he will need to ramp up this year end holiday. -
Any positive feedback on Lit? I have less than 36 hours to persuade my daughter to do Lit not geography. Everyone says she should take Lit but she won’t believe them. She is an avid reader and an amazing writer.

actually my daughter's tutor advised her to take literature because it doesn't require intensive studying.
although my girl has been passing literature, she doesn't want to take it in sec 3...otherwise it's one subject less to study but still count towards o levels.
we would need to submit the subject combination form next week.
