Form-teacher said due to her SA2 Math failed by 6 marks, she is not advised to take A-math!
So I think the teacher has explained. Actual marks obtained at the end of year written paper, which most of the time includes, the syllabus of the entire year, is fairly indicative of a student’s ability in the subject. I think the school has a fixed set of prerequisites for certain upper sec subjects and prerequisites are not plucked out of the sky. It could also be because the school can cater for say 36 students for a pure science class, and your daughter is no.37 based on all subject average, or based on maths and science grades, etc, so you can either appeal, or switch school.

Most importantly, you should examine the end of year paper and see what actually went wrong. Failing an exam paper is big deal, isnt it?

hello to ALL,
today the Sec 2 posting results was out, and i suffered a rude shock.
My daughter scored B4 in Math, A1 in Science, A1 in Literature, but got posted to combined science, pure Lit and POA.
Form-teacher said due to her SA2 Math failed by 6 marks, she is not advised to take A-math!
It doesn't make sense to me.... those good in Math can do pure Sciences, while those good in Science cannot do both Math?? How the school got this kind of unrealistic mentality!
A1 in sci yet posted to combined science? Is it due to her overall not meeting criteria for pure sciences?
Perhaps you can appeal since the form teacher was unable to explain this part?

Most schools have a minimum Maths requirement in order to do pure sciences.

You may try to appeal, request for your girl to take A-Math next year. At least, the school should allow her to try for a year if the student has the determination to take up the challenge. At end of Sec 3, review again if she should continue in Sec 4 or drop the subject. Personally, I do not see any problem in giving it a try in Sec 3.

There’s a problem in giving things a try in Sec 3.

While we do have indications of the kid’s results in some subjects, we don’t have her performance in the others. Those will be important considerations in whether she:
(A) should appeal to include A Math; and
(B) can realistically cope with A Math as an additional subject.

Nonetheless, based on what’s said, I am deducing that she have 7 subjects for Os - typical for an average to above average students. However, if she is successful in her appeal for A Math, she will be having 8 subjects - the number of subjects typically taken by above average to better students. Therefore, it’s worthwhile to take a realistic look and examine whether she’s able to cope (academically) with the burden of another subject. I think there are more than enough anecdotal evidences to suggest that an average student attempting 8 subjects is going to have an uphill struggle (for an entire year). While it’s possible to review and drop the subject in Sec 3 or 4, there’s no point in insisting on A Math if it is going to be detrimental to the other subjects by sucking up all of her time and energy.

Alternatively, you can drop a subject (POA being the obvious candidate) to accommodate A Math. However, that carries a huge risk if she only has 7 subjects. If she can’t continue, she’s down to 6 subjects. If she can’t can’t score well, that’s not much different from having 6 subjects only. If she’s struggling on the subject, it is also likely to have an impact on the performance of the other subjects.

Hi

You should try to appeal for A maths as I really believe maths can be improved easily through practice and coaching. If still not allowed, do not despair. The road to A level (if kid insists) is not closed as you can still take H1 maths in A level (A maths is not prerequisites) however if she wants to pursue science or engineering in poly, please check if A maths is prerequisite or not. Strategically I will take POA over A maths as its so much more easier to score.

A Math is pre-requisite to... nothing in Poly.

However, for local universities' business / accountancy courses, applicants are expected to have read and passed either H1 Math or O Level A Math.

Generally speaking, A Math is only useful if you intend to choose Science or Engineering courses. Otherwise, stick to another subject that’s easier to score (like POA).

Dear parents

It appear science and math are the popular choice as opposed to humanity. I am offering here another perspective on subjective combination selection.

A quick check on the internet show most of our Singapore leaders majored in humanity.

Some of the successful tech companies in the world, their leader majored in humanity.

Pls also have a look at this YouTube video, on “why tech need humanity”
https://youtu.be/F2XPF6rQ6fs

Human endeavours are often dictated by inherent human needs. Studies of humanity allow us to identify, address and communicate those needs.

Science/Math deal with how to do things. Humanity deal with why are we doing those things. Broadly speaking, Humanity give us directions and science/math give us solutions.

Science/Math and Humanity are all important. Each has their role to play in our complex world.

If our child strength lies in Science/Math, choosing
Science heavy subject combination will be useful in their career/lives. If our child strength lies in Humanity, choosing humanity heavy subject combination will also be useful in their career/lives. If our child strength lies in both science, math and humanity, choosing a balance subject combination will also be useful in their career/lives.

Our leaders / politicians are mainly technocrats. Therefore, most of them majored or are from Science / Math based courses.

P/S: I’ve counted ONLY 5 cabinet level leaders who are not from science / math courses - 4 lawyers and Dr Mohd Maliki.
