For HMT, there is no picture. Only topic and continuous. So just choose the question that you are most confident. Normally for MT, the teacher will advise to do picture.

For picture, maybe it's hard to score on contents, most people will be writing the same thing. To score, may need to depend on your language. However, it's a safe bet, compared to writing out of point. Out of point, max you can get is 8/40 only. If you write beautifully, maybe 10/40.
I do hear about these 8 marks too. However, according to the CL teacher, the expectation of HCL is 2.5 pages and CL is 2 pages. Of course must not write too many 啰嗦 words.

With PSLE approaching soon, parents should be focusing more on exam techniques rather than cramming the kids with info.

That's what I'm doing with my students now. We've completed content and process application skills. Now is the time to focus on exam techniques and strategies this September holidays.

Especially for English - Now it's too late to restart grammar, it's also too late to start learning vocabulary. The techniques I teach are to increase the chances of getting a right answer even if they really do not know the answers.

          Science and HMT Tomorrow.

both on the same day ?
Oops I meant Science today and HMT tomorrow.

Update: Science was killer. Half of my class girls didn't finish, still left like 3/4 questions. Boys finished, still got time for toilet and playing with stationery. :stupid: :stupid:

My son told me that many P6 pupils were seen crying yesterday. I asked him why, and he said that they had failed some of their subjects (he doesn't know which subject, but he said most likely maths or english). To make things worse, these kids are from the top band classes. Poor kids. It's only the prelims and they are already so devastated. I hope they are not demoralised by this, since psle is just 1.5 mths away.

but which school is this ?

and why should prelim standard be tougher than the normal tests and SA ? unless they (both teachers and students) have not been doing their work .....
It's a school in Bedok. Not a single person in the cohort gets A* for Science. Surprisingly, even those classes with hods as their teachers, failed 😞

I think most of the schools are working very hard to bring up the standard.

Three weeks ago, dd (P5) was given one of the neighbour school 2009 CA2 Maths test paper for practicing. Usually I thought the neighbour school’s paper should be easier but to my surprise the paper was even tougher than the other top school test papers that we practice.

This school is also located in Bedok. It could be the same school or another school.

I guess may be the Science Paper that they set was in a very different approach than those assessment book or test paper that the child have practiced before.

Don't worry as I believe they should able to catch up and do very well in the PSLE after the teacher goes through with them the answer.

DD did very badly in open ended comprehension:( she is trying her level best but ends up getting low marks. I dont know if anything can be done to help her now? Any tips? I am really worried as she did the whole paper well except this section. Her answers seem to be ok to me but mafks not awarded. Is the marking during PSLE as strict as this?

                  Pls help

Actually, the students usually understand the passage but the problem is that they do not understand what type of answers are expected from them.

Also, some of them do not know when they need to rephrase and answer the questions in their own words.

The only thing that can help now is practising exam techniques to score.

I normally will go through the basics with my students.
                    1. The question words used in the questions - different question words require different answers. Like 'Describe' is asking for details (adjectives) compared to 'Explain' which is asking for reasons or actions leading to a consequence.
                    2. Keywords - words that lead you back to the passage (where the answer may most likely be found).
                    3. Tense Clues - words that indicates if the answer should be in past or present tense.

I will be conducting a 5-day English Intensive program on this (also covering S&T, Compre Cloze & Editting/Punctuation) during the September holidays. I'm left with 2 vacancies. I've posted details here: http://mwtuition.blogspot.com

                        Hi,

I'm still considering about it. Need to figure a way to take orders and send out the file.

                        Regards,
                        Mrs. Wong
