atutor2001:
hi, atutor2010, how you get Based on the above assumptions, the \"average\" mean per subject is about 64 and the \"average\" standard deviation i.e. spread is about 17 marks.My analysis to estimate the average and stardard deviation based on feedback we got here :
T-score 282 (assuming that the raw score is 99 for every subject)
T-score 263 with 4A* (assuming that the raw score is 91 for every subject)
Based on the above assumptions, the \"average\" mean per subject is about 64 and the \"average\" standard deviation i.e. spread is about 17 marks.
Very surprised that the sd (spread) is so big.
Looks like very enigmatic..hehe -

Can somebody help?I cannot sleep well last night because thinking of the 6 choices of secondary school.
My son score 230 and very hard to choose school with this score.
If I choose:-
1.) Maris Stella, COP 232 last year,
2.) Nan Chiau High, COP 231,
3.) Temasek Secondary School, COP 230
4.) ?
5.) ?
6.) ?
Do you think he can get into Maris Stella or Nan Chiau?
Is Temasek good?
I have to make sure he get into the right school as he is easily to get bully.
Need you advice, please help.

mum-in-action:
oh, then how i know my gal result fell under which %
just to clarify,according to the MOE 2011 Secondary Sch admission booklet, page 6 - \"Bonus Points for Admission to Special Assistance Plan (SAP) Schools-Pupils in the top 30% of the PSLE cohort who take Higher Chinese at the PSLE will be given bonus points foradmission to SAP schools ...\"
you can view the booklet here http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/secondary-one-posting/files/secondary-one-posting-english.pdf
I can't find the breakdown of this year's score. My son got 252 + 3 for HCL. His S1 option form states that he is eligible to study HMT in secondary school and he is given all the 3 categories of third language options. His friends who scored below 250 are not offered HMT and have cat 1 and cat 2 third language options.
So we figured the top 30% score is >250.
Over the years, top 10% is about 250 or so. Third language option of French/Jap/German is offered to only top 10% of population (who did MT at PSLE) so if you weren't offered French/Jap/German, you aren't in top 10%.
If top 10% is about 250, then top 30% is about 230?
In any case, you can only use your HMT bonus points when applying to SAP schools. And SAP schools would probably have COPs of more than top 30%.
Thanks for info. Its somewhat consoling that my son is in the top 10% of the cohort We,including his teachers expected him to do better.
Just to share with the parents here. I read an article in the Review section of the Straits Times yesterday. Its called University admissions: Go beyond exam smarts. I read the article before collecting my son's results and it gave me a good perspective of how I should respond to my son's results.
thks for the inform. -

Just simple arithmetics and simultaneous equation.

Top T-scorer is 282 --> 282/4 = 70.5 (average T-score per subject)
T-score = 50 + 10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 70.5
10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 70.5 - 50
10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 20.5
(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 2.05
(Raw score - Mean) = 2.05 x Std D
Mean = Raw score - 2.05 x Std D
(I have assumed that the average raw score for this great guy is 99)
Mean = 99 - 2.05 x Std D --- eqn 1
Someone posted that with 4A* the T-score is 263. (I assume that the average raw score is the minimum for A* = 91.)
Using the similar process, to obtained the 2nd equation :
T-scorer is 263 --> 282/4 = 65.75 (average T-score per subject)
T-score = 50 + 10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 65.75
10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 65.75 - 50
10x(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 15.75
(Raw score - Mean)/Std D = 1.575
(Raw score - Mean) = 1.575 x Std D
Mean = Raw score - 1.575 x Std D
Mean = 91 - 1.575 x Std D --- eqn 2
Solving eqn 1 & 2,
Std Dev = 16.84 marks
Mean = 64.47
Just an indicative estimate but it gives me an idea of the mean and the spread. -
Since the papers were easy this year, I suppose the national average should be higher and standard deviation lower. I took the national average as 79 and standard deviation as 10. Therefore, a raw score of 77 marks is converted to a T-score of 48 (T-score of 50 = national average per subject) or B grade rather than an A grade which would have been the case during school examinations. Not sure if my analysis is correct. Any ideas?

If there is no change, the scores should be :

A 75 - 90
B 60 - 74

E 20 - 34
U < 20 -

Can anybody clarify with me Why the table G-1 on the booklet does not include all sch? There are only 66 schools on that list, but there are totally 160+ schools, I understand there are some IP schools should be excluded, but still meet that gap. Thanks.
I need to know the Band level for the target school.
