The hard truth: it's not impossible but very difficult for her to switch JCs.
...
Should I support her decision in changing schools and possibly redoing her JC1 studies even if it means one more year to her tertiary education? Or is it possible to change schools and do her JC2 studies at the new college instead?
...
Firstly, very few JCs accept a Year 2 transfer. Based on her O Level results, these are the list of JCs she's eligible for:
EJC, TJC, SAJC, AJC (SRJC), CJC, MJC (TPJC), PJC (JJC), YJC (IJC)
She would have qualified for those in red based on her COP.
Hence, if she is looking at a transfer, her best hope would be to those that are lower than her COP.
Even then, she would probably have to score and do reasonable well in her current JC - which is going to be challenge if she's not happy. If she don't score well enough for promotion, likelihood of transfer happening is even more unlikely. -
Not sure what to say, except that people do best in things that they liked doing.
Your daughter seems pretty unhappy with the JC she is in, or at least her friends in the JC. Are you sure she’ll be happy somewhere else?
If you think she is and you are open to her repeating her JC1, maybe talk to MOE or the JC she is interested in joining. See if they have any openings. But I think it is better for you to get to the root of the problem by asking why she needs to do Chinese at ‘A’-Levels, given that she has already gotten HCL at ‘O’-Levels. -

My opinion is don't change school. Maybe ask the school to change class. If she doesn't like to see her physics tutor, then don't attend the physics class. just attend outside tuition.Hello there, my daughter is currently a JC1 in another JC.
She took her 'O' Levels last year and got 14 points raw, nett is 10 points. Overall, she did well for her languages, but under-performed slightly for her mathematics and humanities. Her sciences were also under-performed as well.
She went to a JC nearby our house (one of the merging colleges), but she is not happy there as many of the students there are often very sarcastic towards her not taking H1 Chinese as she is one of the very few in her class that doesn't take H1 Chinese and the school does not value Chinese at all. Not just so, her H2 Physics and GP tutors are really rude and biased towards students who fared well for their 'O's and also mid years.
She is hoping to switch JCs in her JC2 year if she promotes, but she also doesn't mind redoing JC1 at another college.
As a mother, I have seen how she is really sad with her current college, as she has been skipping school a lot this year to avoid classes with her physics tutor and even her fellow students in the college. She has been sleeping alot since the year started, and I can tell she isn't happy where she is right now. I am actually worried for her psychological well-being as well as her secondary school valued Chinese as a subject a lot, and she did well, but now she is in a school that doesn't value Chinese at all and she even gets mocked at for having taken Higher Chinese at 'O' Levels, with people saying things like \"You don't even take H1 Chinese\", \"Ya la ya la HCL zai la\" etc etc. She often talks to me about how much she really wished she went to another college instead, or that she went to a polytechnic instead. She now stays at home a lot, and the only times she goes out of house is to go to school, tuition, or to meet her secondary school friends. She gets excited about meeting her secondary school friends, and she can even wake up a couple of hours earlier just to get ready to meet them. These days, she keeps telling me she wants to go back to Malaysia already and she doesn't want to go to school anymore. What do you think I should do?
She aspires to become a doctor, and she already has her future planned out, which I am really proud of her for for knowing what she wants in life and knowing what her passions are. She speaks of her aspirations so proudly and happily, and every small improvement in her academics make her so happy as it is like a stepping stone to her dreams. She is happy studying for what she wants, but seeing her dread going to school is heartbreaking for me as a mother to see.
She is happy going to tuition learning her sciences, but dreads going to school.
Should I support her decision in changing schools and possibly redoing her JC1 studies even if it means one more year to her tertiary education? Or is it possible to change schools and do her JC2 studies at the new college instead?
Please do advise..
Anyway, A level Chinese is only for JC1 students, right? Next year her classmates (if she can't change class) would have forgotten about she passing O level HCL because nobody is studying CL anymore in JC2.
Btw, JC life is different from Sec 1-4. My son is in IP JC and he told me that his most enjoyable years were when he was in Year 1 to 4. So, I think it will be just a waste of 1 year if your daughter change JC. It will never be the same as in secondary school. Just bear with it, It is only a few months more. -
am y4 this year in an ip secondary school and currently deciding on jc subj combi!
am debating between these
1. h1 math vs h2 math
2. pcme vs cmeg
my math is pretty weak and didn't do well in math throughout secondary school, math teacher told me to take h1. many of my friends are suggesting to me to try h2 for a year then drop if i really can't manage, but i myself am not even sure if i can do well in h2 math even if i work harder in the subject next year
i understand that h2 math is important but i feel taking h1 will guarantee me a better grade throughout jc and ultimately at As (i have no plans going for engineering)
basically physics vs geog, science stream vs hybrid. my geog has always been stronger than physics and i definitely prefer geog more, but would taking cmeg + h1 math narrow down my university choices by a lot? heard from seniors in jc that physics is really tough there and a number of them are going to drop physics from h2 to h1 the next year.
generally my ideal would be cmeg + h1 math but i am pretty worried where that subject combi would eventually lead me to! like university and career choices :(( any thoughts? -

I think you know which combination appeals to you. PCME doesn't sound like something you'll enjoy, especially given that you do not intend to pursue engineering. Between H1 and H2 Math, I would rather go for an assured A in H1 than struggle through a year of H2 Math only to realize that I can't cope. The time could've been better spent on your other H2 subjects.am y4 this year in an ip secondary school and currently deciding on jc subj combi!

With the hybrid CGEm, you can consider courses in FASS, Science, Business, Accountancy, Liberal Arts etc. Just not Engineering or courses that require a strong background in Math and Physics. A job with URA perhaps? Or teaching as possible career choice? Business etc are very much open. -
Hi there, I wonder if boys could apply for UK unis in J2 or could they only apply in their first year of NS? I have heard that some boys applied during their J2 but some uk unis state that their deferment is one year. I think it is great if they could apply in J2 so as to get it done before they go NS. Thank you!

Depends on uni policy.
Those that accept deferment up to one year - apply during NS.
Those that accept deferment up to two years - apply in J2. -

I agree with jtoh. If you've always been weaker at Maths and don't think you can do well in H2, then it probably wasting time to try, then drop to H1. My older girl was making the same decision a few years ago, and we encouraged her to take H1 Maths and work harder on her H2s (you only need 3 H2s for university entry). Also, if your Maths is weak, you are unlikely to do well in Physics, so Geog is a better choice in terms of grades.

For career, you are unlikely to want a career that requires the subjects you are weak in (ie Physics and Maths), so don't worry about it. With a combination like CEG + H1 maths, there are many things you can do. -

Interesting. My A-Level subject combi is a result of interest vs necessity. Interest is computer science. Necessity to me means physics because I don't see life beyond physics. I felt that it is more important to go for something that interests me rather than things that everyone would have gone for. Had Further Math for the 1st 3 months (while waiting for o-level results) but found it tough so I dropped it.am y4 this year in an ip secondary school and currently deciding on jc subj combi!

So the most important question to ask is if you would like the combi. -

Thanks Floppy. Yes but I have heard some applied in J1, defer one more after that one year, I hope we could do that.Song22:
