am y4 this year in an ip secondary school and currently deciding on jc subj combi!


am debating between these

1. h1 math vs h2 math

2. pcme vs cmeg

my math is pretty weak and didn't do well in math throughout secondary school, math teacher told me to take h1. many of my friends are suggesting to me to try h2 for a year then drop if i really can't manage, but i myself am not even sure if i can do well in h2 math even if i work harder in the subject next year i understand that h2 math is important but i feel taking h1 will guarantee me a better grade throughout jc and ultimately at As (i have no plans going for engineering)

basically physics vs geog, science stream vs hybrid. my geog has always been stronger than physics and i definitely prefer geog more, but would taking cmeg + h1 math narrow down my university choices by a lot? heard from seniors in jc that physics is really tough there and a number of them are going to drop physics from h2 to h1 the next year.

generally my ideal would be cmeg + h1 math but i am pretty worried where that subject combi would eventually lead me to! like university and career choices :(( any thoughts?

I think you know which combination appeals to you. PCME doesn't sound like something you'll enjoy, especially given that you do not intend to pursue engineering. Between H1 and H2 Math, I would rather go for an assured A in H1 than struggle through a year of H2 Math only to realize that I can't cope. The time could've been better spent on your other H2 subjects.

With the hybrid CGEm, you can consider courses in FASS, Science, Business, Accountancy, Liberal Arts etc. Just not Engineering or courses that require a strong background in Math and Physics. A job with URA perhaps? Or teaching as possible career choice? Business etc are very much open.

Hi there, I wonder if boys could apply for UK unis in J2 or could they only apply in their first year of NS? I have heard that some boys applied during their J2 but some uk unis state that their deferment is one year. I think it is great if they could apply in J2 so as to get it done before they go NS. Thank you!

Depends on uni policy.
Those that accept deferment up to one year - apply during NS.
Those that accept deferment up to two years - apply in J2.

I agree with jtoh. If you've always been weaker at Maths and don't think you can do well in H2, then it probably wasting time to try, then drop to H1. My older girl was making the same decision a few years ago, and we encouraged her to take H1 Maths and work harder on her H2s (you only need 3 H2s for university entry). Also, if your Maths is weak, you are unlikely to do well in Physics, so Geog is a better choice in terms of grades.

For career, you are unlikely to want a career that requires the subjects you are weak in (ie Physics and Maths), so don't worry about it. With a combination like CEG + H1 maths, there are many things you can do.

Interesting. My A-Level subject combi is a result of interest vs necessity. Interest is computer science. Necessity to me means physics because I don't see life beyond physics. I felt that it is more important to go for something that interests me rather than things that everyone would have gone for. Had Further Math for the 1st 3 months (while waiting for o-level results) but found it tough so I dropped it.
So the most important question to ask is if you would like the combi.

Thanks Floppy. Yes but I have heard some applied in J1, defer one more after that one year, I hope we could do that.

I have 2 children who graduated from JC - one is from IP, the other is from JAE.


Speaking from my experience only (others may think differently), there is a marked difference in the academic calibe of both IP and JAE and it shows at JC level. JAE students need a lot of hardwork, determination and peservance to catch up with IP students.

This is not true for VJC. The IP students are very good in critical thinking. But when it comes to content, drilling subjects, the O levellers are better, they know how to score.

Actually it may be quite true. My dd's JC math teacher said that students who take H1 Math from the beginning tend to do better in it than students who drop H2 Math to do H1 Math after JC1.

Quite true[/quote]From what my dd1 had gone thru this year (she is in jc1 now), it does not seem so. My girl isnt very sociable to know the happening in school but her jae classmates told her apparently the 75 rank pts n above for mye results were dominated by ip students and looks like it is going to be same for promo as school will only release ranking after pw op. Content based subject like econs needs evaluation skills and in her school most top scorers for econs are also good in gp which again are dominated by ip students. My dd2 is in o level track n wants to follow her sis to go jc next time, so i m not sure how well she can cope next time as from what i can see, there is a gap judging from the comparison in jc1 results but i am not sure if it happens in all ipjc.
