I started wearing glasses at 10yo.

I tried contact lenses when I was 14 but can only wear for 3 hrs due to dryness…
In 1999 May (about to get married in few months time), I decided to go for LASIK as I did not want to be a bride in glasses. I made the decision in 1 day.

There was a 1 month gap between the procedures for the 2 eyes. During that period, I had to wear glasses where 1 side is with power and the other is without. My eyes looked funny through the glasses, one big one small.

Done at Dr Jerry Tan, $7k for both eyes

        kiasimom:
I know of many friends who have very high degree of myopia and is hesitant about performing LASIK for fear that it will have complications.

Let me share my personal experience.

I started wearing glasses at the age of 9yo.
I started to wear contact lenses at the age of 15yo for the sake of beauty. Girls at that age are starting to be very concerned of their appearances.

My relationship with contact lenses lasted for another 10 years until I decided to try LASIK.

I have always been a wearer of contact lenses. Everything is fine except for a little dryness and redness of the eyes when I removed the lenses after long hours.

When I was 25yo, my condition worsens.
My eyes will start to \"reject\" the contact lenses and many times I am left with infection.
The infection was so bad that I could not really see clearly and open my eyes. My eyes are blood shot red and swollen. They were tearing non-stop.

As I was working in frontline at that time, I was very consious about how I looked with my thick glasses ( My left eye is 650 degree and my right eye is 625 degree and I have very high astigmatism too. )
I lose confidence in my appearance and it made me looked nerdy.

After discussing with DH and a close friend who had LASIK, I decided to try LASIK treatment.

I went to TTSH for a diagnostic test as not all is suitable for LASIK.
        The tests were very thorough.

They will require you to go through a series of tests to determine if you are suitable for LASIK.

Once the tests show that you are suitable for LASIK, you will be interviewed by an ophthalmologist to discuss the suitable LASIK treatment.

To find out more, please go to:
        http://www.ttsh.com.sg/new/clinicalspecial/eye_lasik.htm

I am found to be a suitable candidate and made an appointment to have my vision corrected over two days, one eye a day.

I was rather nervous on my first day of laser correction. The whole process was painless and I could see clearly almost immediately after the surgery!!!

After the second day, I could see clearly with both eyes. I was advised on how to take care of my eyes.

I went back for follow-ups and vision test to check how good my vision has been corrected. I obtained a 6/6!! Impressive! :celebrate:

Many years down the road, I am still blessed with perfect eyesight.

The joy I had is I am no longer dependable on glasses and contact lenses.
The moment I open my eyes every morning, I could see the time on the clock very clearly.

When I go travelling, I do not have to pack contact lenses, solution and glasses with me.

To quote what my friend says, I regretted not going for LASIK earlier.

Today, I am very happy to have perfect eyesight. I don't have to wear glasses when driving in the night and rainy days.

All thanks to DH and LASIK.
        Hi Kiasimom,

I have been contemplating it for a while. Just dislike hospitals.

A quest: Once you have decided on going ahead with the LASIK, an appt is given to you right, to have the surgery done at a particular time, so you have to report early etc... Do you have to wait for long aft you report b4 your surgery?? I hope I phrased my quest clearly

The reason why I am asking is that when I had a minor surgery done some yrs back at KK, I was told to come down at 7.30am in the morn and they made me change and then I waited and waited and waited .... until 3 plus when DH called and lambasted the nurses as to why I had been kept waiting for so long. To my knowledge, the doc was seeing patients ....
I was bored and blind 😉 (they made me remove my glasses) so I couldn't watch tv etc.... BTW, I had gone there as a pte patient of the doc. Aft that episode and also due to one other incident, I lost faith in the doc and changed gynaes real quick ....

          Hi autumnbronze,

On the day of surgery, I did not wait for very long.
I came at the scheduled time.
I think I waited for less than half an hour 🙂

            Hi autumnbronze,

I highly recommend Dr Heng as he is very patient and gentle.

After so many years, I did not have any corrections done 🙂

Did mine 3 yrs ago. wanted to do it b4 I got married but was put off by the need to do it 1 eye at a time. Glad that I waited cos it cost only $3000 instead of $7000.

I am really happy to be able to see without glasses or contacts. And I guess in the long run, it is cheaper as I was using daily disposable contacts.

The whole process is relatively painless. Only thing I did not expect was for my eyes to smart and tear that much about 10 mins after the operation. Luckily DH was with me or else I will not be able to get home.

Now still perfect eyesight. But problem is night vision is compromised. I am still having a lot of starburst effect which makes driving at night a bit more difficult.

On the whole, for most people, Lasik really is a ‘freeing’ experience. However, there are those the have side effects like me. For me it is manageable so I will still say no regrets.

                    Hi funz,

How do you deal with the starburst effect?
Is it astigmatism? Did you wear glasses for driving at night?

I had a pair of astig glasses done and yah I wear that when driving at night especially on rainy nights or unfamiliar roads. It improves clarity but does not remove the starburst effect much.

How I deal with it? I have to watch TV with the lights on, again not much problem cos not a TV person. And I drive a lot more cautiously at nite. If you see a car at a cross junction taking a long time make the turn, that could be me.

                        Hi funz,

Maybe that is one of the thing that LASIK cannot correct :?

I mean as long as it doesn't affect us a great deal, LASIK on the overall is still thumbs up :celebrate:
