Yah, hard to shake off some parents’ / people mentality that poly is a lesser alternative to JC / polytechnic

if paycheck is the concern. In this particular field / course of study, it’s the talent that people are willing to pay for. My cousin, for example, is making far more money than many people I know. Not bad for a guy who don’t have a degree and has an O Level score that is probably double / triple that of people I know.

I’m also doing research for possible specialisations for my DS. One issue that came up was that he (being the creative sort) doesn’t take well to doing commissioned work. He just wants to draw what he likes, rather than what a client specifies.

Probably can’t survive in the industry right? I think this is a common issue in any artistic line (eg. Even architectural or music composition)

I can’t give you a definite answer but I think maturity will have an impact on his development. Now, doing what he likes and what he wants, is probably understandable. As he gets older, maybe satisfying his client’s brief while providing his own input and twist to it will be seen as an achievement / satisfaction to him.

My cousin graduated from NYP from a similar or same course a long time ago.

IIRC his secondary results weren’t fantastic but he loved to draw. He didn’t take art or was offered art in school either. Nonetheless, he had a lot of sketches, drawings that he could present and showcase during his interview (not for EAE but I think it was for JAE or appeal or something). No specific theme but a lot of fantasy drawings like dragons, knights etc (D&D FTW - it’s a boys’ thing).

He used to work for one of the major VFX production houses and participated in several Hollywood productions after graduation. Now working for a financial institution heading their marketing / production / something team.

As VFX become more prevalent in films and productions, online media getting more prominence, more videos / info being digitized and streamed, esports / gaming being a huge industry, I don’t think you should be worried about job prospects as there’s a strong demand for talents in this field.
Floppy, what is IIRC and VFX? Besides Poly, where else can a kid interested in this or has talent in this go?

                  Abbreviation:
IIRC - If I Recall (or Remember) Correctly
                  VFX - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_effects

In terms of \"where else to go\", it's pretty much the same as per any area of interest / study:
                  1. ITE - example ITE's https://www.ite.edu.sg/courses/course-finder/course/higher-nitec-in-visual-effects
                  2. Polytechnic - example NYP and TP
                  3. Local University - example NTU's School of Art, Design and Media, SUSS' School of Science and Technology

If you are looking overseas, there are specialised colleges like Germany's https://www.filmakademie.de/en/ and USA's Gnomon - https://www.gnomon.edu (which is right in the heart of Hollywood).

Last but not least, there's always the 'learn-it-yourself' and 'express-yourself' route.

Learn-it-yourself - You can buy industry grade software such as Adobe After Effects and play around with it, or you can download https://www.blender.org for free.
Express-yourself - YouTube, vimeo, etc. like this guy:
