This post got me looking because I want to get a dictionary like this also. I found that Oxford has one. The link is below. I have a copy of the regular Oxford English Dictionary in my classroom and always encourage the students to look up a word if they don't know it. I'm going to get the science one myself also and check it out.

        Here's the link to Amazon:

        http://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Science-Oxford-Paperback-Reference/dp/019956146X/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

And I also found it at Kinokuniya:

It depends on the school. Is your friends son in an IP school? If so they might be covering those more advanced organelles. I include these in my notes when I do the Sec 1 class on cells for IP students because I saw it a couple of times in IP school bio notes.

Usually for lower Sec biology they do cytoplasm, cell wall, nucleus, vacuoles, chloroplasts and sometimes mitochondria, but not golgi body or endoplasmic reticulum. For example if you look in the new Pearson Lower Sec textbook for 2013 Syllabus, you do not see those advanced organelles there. But schools can vary. So best thing is to find out from the teacher because some of the schools are introducing upper level biology material in Sec 1 (same goes for physics and chemistry). If the school is doing this, it is a good idea to purchase the O-Level textbook as a reference book for the students for those times when advanced topics are introduced.

                  Dr Daniel,

DS is in Sec 3, and he is taking Pure Physics and Pure Chemistry.
Can you help to recommend some good guide books and assessment books?

                  Thanks in advance.

I hv one physics qn, can someone help to solve this qn.

A student wished to determine the density of iron. He obtained several pieces of iron of irregular shapes and measure their masses. He then obtained theircindividual volumes using the method of displacement.
                    a. A using the readings obtained, he plotted a graph of volume V against mass m. Sketch the shape of the graph obtained in the axes provoded. Explain yr answer.y axis is v/m3 and x axis is m/g.
                    b. How would he obtain the density fr the plotted graph?

I personally find the following books useful:

                        1) Longman 1001 MCQs (http://www.pearson.sg/cos/o.x?c=%2Fpearson%2Flocallib&ptid=176&pg=1&sort=&subj=Physics+&level=&kw=mcq&type=title&ipp=20)

                        2) Smashing Exams (http://smashingexams.com.sg/)

The Marshall Cavendish Science guidebooks aren't too good though, in my opinion. I don't find the materials inside any different from the textbooks.
