My son failed his physics for this term. Anyone has any idea how to study for physics and for that matter LSS? Would getting a tuition teacher at this stage help?

I was at Bras Basah Complex with my wife yesterday. They were a lot of parents at the Popular outlet. I thought it’s the holidays now, and I could not believe that there were so many parents buying books there.
The staff there recommended a few books. One of them is the Smashing Exams Lower Secondary Science Volumes A and B. I bought both volumes. Also, I also bought Wiseman Comprehensive Guide. -

The first thing that Sec 1 physics students need to do is to understand the metric system and unit conversions. This is always my first goal with students because all of the physics topics are built on top of this foundation. Usually next they will do speed and density which involve a lot of mathematical manipulations with units. Getting the mathematics skills straight is the first priority.
After that, many of the physics topics should be understood conceptually first before moving on to problem solving techniques. And it is crucial for Sec 1's to get into the habit of writing their structured explanations based on their own understanding and not memorization of structured answers. If they start down the wrong path of just memorizing everything, this has far reaching consequences all through secondary school and beyond. But if they get on the right track of learning science they way it is meant to be learned, through conceptual understanding, then they will have a much easier time and also develop more self confidence. The confidence will come since it is the student who is expressing themselves based on what is in their own mind, not just copying what someone else tells them to write. -

Advise appreciated. Both schools in comparison are IPs schools. Why the difference? Chemistry / Bio/ Physics are higher secondary topics in Science? tks

Some schools are using the word Matter now which I also find strange. Some Schools recently renamed some of the Sec 1 topics as follows:
Exploring Diversity of Matter by its Physical Properties
Exploring Diversity of Matter by its Chemical Composition
Exploring Diversity of Matter Using Separation Techniques
Essentially the first topic is a physics topic that used to be called \"speed and density\" and a general science topic that used to be called \"classification of materials\".
The second topic used to be called \"Elements, Compounds and Mixtures\", and the third topic was called \"Separation of Mixtures\".
So this is Physics and Chemistry, just renamed. The content of what students will learn in Sec 1 is still essentially the same. As for IP schools, they go into more depth and explore harder questions than the Express track, although it does depend on the school because I find in my tuition classes that some express track schools can be pretty tough as well
