      Hi parents,

May I know how your children’s examination are set?
My child is doing process skills learning, concepts and application from his tutor and I’m wondering the schools that structure in the same way? if so, what materials do your children use? My child finds it interesting with the exposure it brings. Thank you so much.

Hi Gisele924, Different schools might have different ways of testing their child especially when they are still in lower secondary. I compared my niece's exam paper with my DS, its slightly different.

Process skills learning, concept and applications are all very important. From what i understand from both DS, their school do go through but its not enough for them because they have questions and yet unable to ask because the teacher don have time for them.

Which is why ur tutor come in place. if ur child find it interesting and like the current tutor u have, the just continue. As long as the child loves it, hey usually will learn more and wan to lean more.

It applies to all my 3 children too. If they enjoy, they do learn and the result is good, i will continue with the current tutor who can bring out the best in them in schoolwork.

My daughter’s school teaches science in modular topics (physics throughout the year and Chemistry for first half and Bio for second half). So very hard to join normal enrichment centres as topics taught are different at different times. She is quite lost in chemistry so I am considering to look for a tutor for science overall who can help in all 3 topics to guide her. Live in the east (bedok area). If anyone knows of good science tutor to recommend, please let me know.

Personally, as a full-time tutor, I teach my kids and my students to ask “Why” rather than “How”. It’s better to learn the idea behind the problem and dissect it than to continuously solve many of the same types of problems and memorise the form.

With the proper understanding, the child learns how to solve problems because he understand its, instead of knowing how to solve it because they have done similar questions before from memory and not understand it because when they face a brand new problem, they will be stumped if they don’t know how to reason things out. I advise keeping a journal of all the important points learnt in the lesson and study alongside the questions your child does.
