Braces for kids
-
Actually I'm very curious.....or rather, you can call me skeptical
How do they actually put braces when the adult teeth are not out? What happens to all the gaps? eg. HxH H=Teeth, X=gap Do they leave the gap alone? So if the teeth starts sprouting in an angle etc, behind other teeth etc etc...how do they deal with it? Aren't they going to keep adjusting and adjusting? I had to extract 9 teeth (4 wisdom, 4 adult & 1 exta by GA).....
Maybe these experts are really good....or maybe they just want to push treatment fast....or maybe, it depends on the severity of the misalignment....I dun know. :?
Must agree, price difference between hospital and private clinic is small these days. Btw, also curious, after treatment starts, every visit (for the normal review and small adjustment to the wires....how much is it for the private?) -

For HXH, the wire just pass over the X . The adult tooth will come out slowly so since dd has to go back every 4 wk, the orthodontist will know how to adjust, no chance for the new adult tooth to spout anywhere it likes. In dd's case, she doesn't need to extract any adult teeth cos she has braces now, the orthodontist can adjust the teeth so less chance of overcrowding. I dun think any orthodontist will try to speed up treatment to get business, parents are educated and will take action for any bad treatment. For payment in my case, we paid 50% of total cost at 1st fixing of braces, the remaining 50% spread out over 1 year, so every subsequent visit cost abt $180.Actually I'm very curious.....or rather, you can call me skeptical

DS has the same problem. Getting his braces fixed in during the March hols. DS is coming to 9 in a few mths. Dentist said he is ok to get braces now as all his milk teeth drop out already.

But I will keep the contacts in mind incase I wanna seek more opinion. Besides $$, I also have to factor in distance..cos it will not be a 1-time or 2 times affair.

Brought dd to a restructured hospital for consultation following a referral from school dentist. Hv to say, really NOT impressed by the service. I, too, will choose private when the time comes to fix the braces. Waiting for all her adult teeth to be out.
Hv heard that itโs a painful procedure, and better to wait until after PSLE. But dd is self-conscious of her misaligned teeth. Is the process really that bad?
BTW, anyone has any feedback on Raffles Dental at Raffles Hospital? They have a studentโs package for braces + convenient locationโฆ
TIA for any advice. -

It's only painful for the first 2 days, got ulcers and cannot chew. After 2 days, everything's back to normal as they get used to the braces. Thks! Do you mind if I ask which clinic your child goes to? I've been told by a couple of clinics i called that must wait till all adult teeth are out... Would like to check out options.

For dd's case, if wait until all adult teeth are out, then he said got to extract because of overcrowding. So he said if fix braces now, can adjust the space accordingly, so no need to sacrifice adult teeth. dd went to Q & M clinic.

Hi Sall,
In this case, I must really disagree on the statement
\"if wait until all adult teeth are out, then he said got to extract because of overcrowding. So he said if fix braces now, can adjust the space accordingly, so no need to sacrifice adult teeth.\"
When adult teeth grow in an awkward position due to milk teeth still being around, 'overcrowding' will be temporary as milk teeth will drop eventually and space will be created....the only problem is the misalignment. Cases like this, perhaps yes.
However, if overcrowding happens because the jaw is too small for the set of adult teeth, teeth definitely will grow in zigzag manner. If jaw is too small, no matter how early you start the braces, it won't help. Simple logic, No Space means No Space
Yes, there be ulcer and pain in the initial stage. Also whenever the orthodontist make any adjustment, some discomfort is expected for the first 1-2 days. This cycle will probably last for as long as the treatment goes. Extent of discomfort depends on how 'aggressive' is the adjustment.

Hi Cwc, in dd's case, she has no prob with small jaw, so quite easy for orthodontist to fix. That's why he said by fixing braces now, adjustments can be made and adjacent tooth can be shifted a little to make way for the adult tooth that's coming out. Only her milk tooth was extracted. There's no need to extract any adult teeth. It all depends on individual child.
