I went Red Star once and swear never to go there again.

Service was non-existance and the food was coming out (from the kitchen) sooooo slowly that a lot of people just crowd at the kitchen door and grabbed whatever they can when the carts were pushed out ... only carts with non-popular dim sum survived the onslaught.
Oh-oh..sorry to hear of your experience, tankee. I think that place is so comfortable with their old clients, they are operating in the old style, the \"down-market\" style. I agree that unless you really like the place, otherwise you would really never want to go. So those who go for the first time will immediately have one of the 2 conclusions, LOVE it or HATE it, no other ways about it. πŸ˜‰

          Hey Ks2me,

My DH really likes the place too. The one near the Sub Courts rite?? He's always raving abt it cuz he and colleagues go for lunch there. Been promising to take me there but haven't got down to it πŸ˜„

We also used to patronize the one in Thomson Plaza called Kelong something. Closed down already, taken over by Peach Garden. That was good, also pushcart one.

Now, we go to Jiang-Nan Chun at Four Seasons if got strong craving for it. Not pushcart style, but I like their dim sum there πŸ˜„

You must make him promised promised to bring you there at least once, it's next to Manhattan house.

But I must warn you, it is really not up-market at all but it is one place that gives me nostalgic feel and I like the selection.

Yes I went to Kelong before too, not too bad as well but no more liao.

Don't think I have been to Jiang-Nan Chun before for dim sum. Can check it out when craving comes. Thanks. πŸ˜„

          Hi ks2me,

Just spoke to DH abt it. You described it as 'quaint', he describes it as the '1970s wayang place.' I shall have to go and 'see it to believe it' then πŸ˜„

Haiz, he said he'll only bring me if I lose some weight .... πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜„

Ya when you go hor...if you raise your hair abit like bee-hive and wear those mini-skirts from those ah-go-go days, it will auger well with the setting. Now you know why must lose some weight? πŸ˜‰

That place reminds me of this song in Cantonese...

              θ½θ‘—ζ²‘ι’±δΉ°ι’εŒ….......

So our impression of the place is like an imprint, you should get a fairly accurate idea now.

Alamak, I didn't like Red Star leh. Sorry, ks2me, our tastes diverge here a bit. Yah it's old fashioned and all that, but the dim sum is not exquisite. I like Ritz Carlton Summer Pavilion for that, yum! I thought Red Star was for busloads of tourists from Malaysia?

Talking about old fashioned, there's this place called Grand Shanghai at the Copthorne Hotel (used to be affiliated to Ye Shanghai 倜上桷 in HK) . They have that type of Shanghai style songstress singing on a stage - believe this only happens on Friday nights? The food is Shanghai style too, so it's not cantonese dim sum. Food quality is quite good (although not fabulous), but the atmosphere is really something!

Alamak...no need to apologise la... Diversity is what maketh the world interesting....cloning will dull us. πŸ˜‰ It is interesting that our experience varies so much, you saw Malaysia tourists, I saw the First Lady there... Dim sum in the night is interesting too!! ε°η¬ΌεŒ…?

my kids love it...when they returned home, we had many many nights of such \"live\" performance too (their handheld \"mikes\" have been replaced by the ones on the stand - the ones not singing then actually were the stands!) πŸ˜‰
