Original Title: Any good English story book to recommend for upper level kid
Hello
My girl loves to read. She likes reading stephane mayer book, which I saw in the forum, its called chick book or something like that…
She also like vampire stories…but also particular with the print of the book as in the words…too small, she says she doesnt enjoy reading it…
Can anyone recommend some books with not so small print and its a good book to read?
Yesterday, I sent her to the library to borrow books to read and she ended up empty handed and went to boarders to read her vampire story instead…
Thanks -
Hi Lynn,
These are some of the books from the p4 gep reading list:
bridge to terabithia, wind in the willows, sword in the stone, eyes of the amaryllis, old yeller, secret garden, time machine, dark is rising.
I’ve listed some others in the gep thread, but cant find it anymore. too many pages. Perhaps other parents can share?
Some other recommended books, for p5: the golden compass, arthur - the seeing stone/at the crossing place, narnia series, books by agatha christie, alfred hitchcock…and if your child can take horror genre…even edgar allen poe (my all time childhood fav author).
For P6, Dairy of Anne frank, Ender’s Game (a few of them), Andromeda strain (and other M Crichton books), grey king, eleanor roosevelt-a life of discovery.
You can also search for large print books from the nlb online, then reserve it.

Hi Lynn2,
I found these authors good for upper primary kids:
1) Sophie McKenzie - Blood Ties
It has won numerous awards and the plot is thought-provoking and gripping. It is about cloning and people's reactions to it. It links 2 kids who are actually clones but have no idea that they are clones and they need to figure out who their parents really are and how they can escape the clutches of a terrorist group.
2) Neil Gaiman - The Graveyard Book
The author came to Singapore recently during a writer's festival. His books are usually best-sellers. This book is about boy who grows up in a graveyard and is raised and educated by ghosts and how he tries to find the murderer of his family later on. It sounds morbid but it is not gory or scary, the ghosts are more like friendly motherly kind of ghosts. The vocabulary used is good as well.
2) Anthony Horowitz - Alex Rider Series
His use of sentence structure is very varied and the vocabulary can be used to help your child write better, especially for chase, fire and explosion scenes. The plot is about a 14 year old boy solving mysteries, like a cooler version of hardy boys. Boys really love his books.
Hope this helps.

My son used to be a non reader … reads only afew books per year or comics until last christmas when i bought him book 1 from a series called The 39Clues. Now he is absolutely glued to the books . The series currently has 7 books , each comes with a pack of 6 clue cards that he would use to uncover the 39 clues.
If you want to borrow the books from the national library, look under authors Langaris or Watson.
Now, that his appetite is whet , my son is more open to read alot more other lbooks similar to the 39Clues series … Hooray! -
My daughter loved The Graveyard Story. Actually read it myself and it was quite good.
Her latest craze is the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. Some of the titles are
Midnight for Charlie Bone
Charlie Bone and The Time Twister
Charlie Bone and The Invisible Boy
Charlie Bone and The Castle of Mirrors
Charlie Bone and The Hidden King
Charlie Bone and The Beast
Would also recommend the two children's books written by Stephen Hawking (author of A Brief History of Time) and his daughter Lucy Hawking:
George's Secret Key to the Universe
George's Cosmic Treasure Hunt
The first book incorporates facts on the the solar system and black holes into a very entertaining story about George and his new neigbours Annie and her Father Eric and their superintelligent, superpowered talking computer named Cosmos. Have not read the second but my daughter enjoyed it as much if not more than the first. -
Just introduced my boy to Willard Price, Adventure books through someone’s recommendation.
He loves those I can get from the library, but apparently they are out of print. Anyone knows where I can get them? I’m down to the last two books, and he’ll probably be craving for the rest…
Or anyone has any other titles to suggest? Thanks.
Cheers,
Chubby -

I am still trying to get my hands on Cosmic Treasure Hunt but George's Secret Key to the Universe is really cool ! Both my son and I love it.
