E2K Science

Yes it’s only on MOE and some sch’s websites… unfortunately not my child’s sch website so nothing mentioned n probably not conducting there… The program is not taught to external students so only the sch’s students can benefit from it.
-
I didn’t check but i don’t think it is on ds’ school’s website either. You can check with the teachers. I don’t think there are much academic benefits per se, it is really more for interest. I imagine some kids will find it boring and frustrating. Eg in one task they have to construct a scale with limited items, another one they had to make some solution etc. It is quite important to have team mates who get along and be able to tolerate failures.
-
It does provide an alternative way of learning, through projects. Which happens to fit my child…
Right now mine is complaining of repetitive learning in sch… n we have to find various ways n means of exposing him to different topics. Sometimes lack of time so just park him in front tv to watch nat geo etc… otherwise he will just surf the net n start watching n drawing his dinosaurs n figures… if the sch would have such e2k activities, it will definitely be beneficial… i think u will all agree… whether the child will like it or not… -
How old is your child? The programme is usually by invitation at the start of P4.
Mine used to watch nat geo and draws as well and i am ok with that. He has plenty of hobby materials and things he can do; but mostly when he says he is bored, what he really means is he wants company (doing non academic stuff). -
ammonite:
Mine is in P4 this year. I just checked with some parents with children in upper levels and in top class and they said that their children have never been offered those programs too. Nvr heard of. So I guess it's really non-existent in my child's sch...How old is your child? The programme is usually by invitation at the start of P4.

They did share previously that they struggled to find enrichment for their kids who have certain interests in sciences or even math. The sch doesn't cater to math olympaid training in house too. They just offer a MO holiday program for those who are keen and have aptitude for it... doesn't sound like much huh?
Don't get me wrong... i'm ok with my kid watching nat geo and drawing whatever he wants. I was wondering what else to do with him till I encouraged him to keep a book full of his drawings of dinosaurs and action figures... he self learns games like most kids do too. haha... just that, he does those things also due to 'lack of other interesting things' he wants to do. so i have to spend time and money looking for things to do. Tough job catching up. I think similar to yours... when he says he's bored, he sometimes does just want to do non academic stuff like spending time with his family and playing games... chess, sports, etc... He's also very active so he wants to play sports and we have limited ppl in the family with enough energy to keep up with him. I can only wait for his sports program to start for him to be more occupied... -
I am grateful that ds’ school runs the programme. Otherwise I would have to diy at home during school hols.
I used to do that before P4. If you have the inclination, you can buy those big books of experiments and prepare the materials beforehand.
Sounds like you may have a little extrovert like mine. We are all introverts except this little one and we used to have to pass him around on weekends
He drives his brother nuts. It really helps to have a little clique of regular playmates outside of school. -

Hi Parents, is the E2K program in every school? or only selected schools have this opportunity?
NOT All primary schools in Sg offer E2K Science.
For those schools that do offer E2K Science :-
it depends on the individual school itself, as to when they want to start.
Certain schools start at P4 Term 1, while other schools start at P5 Term 1. No fixed rule, as to when they actually want to start.
The decision, whether to offer or not, ultimately lies with the Principal and the Science HOD.
If start in P4 Term 1 :-
it will be based on entire year of P3 overall student's Science results.
If start in P5 Term 1 :-
will be based on past two years' of combined (P3 and P4) Science (SA1 & SA2, CA1 & CA2 ) Science results, plus some other \"hush-hush\" observational criteria upon the class of students, which the Science HOD deem fit and requirements relay down to rest of the Science Teachers in the Science department, after discussed / consulted with Principal.
It is the school that ultimately decide whether or not to conduct this programme, as this programme is Not compulsory, across Mainstream primary schools.
It is best that you approach your son / daughter primary school's Science HOD : clarify directly whether your school got offer, or not. If the school does offer, then may ask HOD yourself : may we know what's our school selection requirements ?
(different schools have different \"hush-hush\" criteria, regarding how they select students, for this E2K Science)
No point checking with parents in the school : because for those Not selected, they won't know what's going on. And even for those who got selected, they prefer to keep quiet & silent about it, so they won't tell. Thus, best to approach HOD, to clarify.
Yes, certain schools do offer both ( E2K Science and E2K Maths), while certain schools offer only E2K Maths, but no E2K Science, while other schools: none offered. -
My DD is lucky enough to be selected for both E2K Science and E2K Maths programme in her school so I shall share my experience with it.
E2K Science
Started : P4 Term 2 (Phew!) , Size About 20 Mainstream kids were selected in P4 term 1. Duration: P4 to P6 once weekly.
Selection: I do not know the exact criteria but most of the kids scored pretty well in their P3 overall Sci & P4 SA1 so I personally assume they are the 20 kids with the highest ability in Science from the cohort.
Observation: My DD loves it. She rather sacrifice any other programme or her CCA for E2K Sc sessions. DD had a group project to do a car/sail without motor, the group had so much synergy, they end up being best friends, both boys and girls. They have recess together everyday etc. she is closer to her E2K Sc group than classmates coz they hv similar interests and conversations are towards Science (my DD is really in reading non fiction books so she prefers to discuss and argue about what she has read eg. diseases, physics theory, etc). Ironically, most of her friends from CCA sports are also in E2K Sci. I do not see materials from the sessions as all must be returned but I would not say its entirely out of the syllables. the theory they learn from the practical done during the sessions strengthen their basic concept understanding as well critical thinking outside of the concepts so it suits these high ability kids & helps nourish them and keep the passion burning. I do not know if this will help with DSA but about 5 of the E2K SC kids were selected for the SMOPS in P5, some not winning anything. my DD refuse to quit E2K Sc so we will let her la. She likes the time with her like-minded friends and hands-on practical. I dont see much materials or project work as its done in sch so its all hearsay from DD when she relates funny or interesting things happening. But she is always happy after E2K Sc sessions and looks forward to the nxt session, at times upset when sessions are cancelled. DD group in E2K are all brilliant kids with different but very keen interest in sci topics. Some cosmology, some robotics, some physics, some chemistry and some bios theories.
E2K Maths
Started : P5 Term 2 (i feel abit too late) , Size About 15 Mainstream kids were selected in P5 term 1. Duration: P5 to P6 once weekly. DD Sch created a joint programme consisting of E2K Maths and Maths Olympiad so the kids gets both training.
Selection: I do not know the exact criteria but most of the kids went through the 2nd round of GEP selection test in P3 so speculation was they used the results from the GEP Round 2 Selection test. Most of the kids were able to score at least a Bronze in the NMOS in p5 even before E2K maths session started.
Observation: Since its a joint programme, my DD says E2K Maths is slightly different from Maths Olympaid training but i dont understand what she described as different.
our schedule from sch states Olympiad training and E2K differently too. I tot it would be boring for her but so far she seems to enjoying it too (altho not as much as E2K Sci). We see the maths olympaid training materials (coz homework) but no e2k maths materials so also hearsay from her. She said some topics are very intriguing and mind challenging. My DD has not prior Maths tuition or enrichment or any Maths Olympiad training whatsoever, I just bought her Terry Chew maths olympiad books and will meddle with the topics when she is free, hence we take these sessions as FREE tuition and training. Anyway its a bit too late to start in p5 as I know some other sch starts Maths Olympiad as early as P2 but DD dont shun it and hopefully be more interested in Maths. We are told not to expect kids will all be selected for competitions but I think they do stand a higher chance to be given an opportunity.
My DD do not have tuitions for any both Sc and Maths and only depend on doing assessment books and test papers so far from P1 so for us, these sessions are free enrichment for her. Its can be time consuming when she comes back from school around 5 to 6pm during days she has E2K but did not require additional time for projects or homework (maybe except Maths Olympaid). I feel its a very interesting and engaging programme for these kids beyond the curriculum.
I know of kids who are very disappointed when they are not selected for E2K programmes as they have the interests in the topics but not given the chance. I dont know if they can appeal to the HOD (for us, the teachers in charge are the GEP Science and Maths HOD) but I do feel there need to be a certain level of understanding and critical thinking ability to be able to really appreciate and benefit from the programme fully.
I am just feel blessed DD is lucky enough to be able to experience such programmes. Whether it help in DSA or not, I dont know yet, PSLE is next year for us...all i know is, such programmes keeps her interested in the subjects and ignited some passion in certain topics.
Hope abv helps...Cheers! :celebrate: -

For my dd sch, selection into e2k is based on sci SA2 P3 results - top 20 scorers. My girl scored 49.5/50 and was selected.
