A Maths is a subject that requires LOTS and LOTS of practice.

I am not so sure if A.Maths is a must for JC.

My understanding is that students can always take H1 Maths in JC, if they have not taken A.Maths at O-Levels.

However, the student may subsequently be limited in his choices for uni, especially engineering courses.
Good students are usually given the following options:

        a) Double language, double math, triple science and 1 humanities, or

        b) Double language, double math, double science and double humanities

Out of all the subjects, the more deterministic subjects are Math and Science. In other words, if you know the subject matters well, you should be able to tell where your standing in O-level is. This is why many students are spending time to excel in the Science and Math concepts so as to guarantee themselves with 4 A's for L1R5 calculation.

As for languages and humanities, they are not as deterministic as Math & Science. At http://singapore.math-chinese-tutor.com, we only hear of stories about students who did well for English/Chinese/Humanities in Prelim but scored only B's at O-level. We hear much less of such story in Science and Math.

For this reason, it is advisable to be diligent in Math and Science. For last 2 years the standard for Math and Science were raised and A1 is not as easy to obtain as before. However, for students taking double-Math, I would say that you are almost guaranteed of A1 for E-Math if you study correctly. You should be able to get A2 for A-Math too if you start doing revision systematically in March/April of your O-level year.

          Bounty:
My daughter is not able to take A Math in Sec 3, she was given POA. Infact, she could not meet the required marks by just 2 to 3 points. Is ther any way she can take A Math privately? Would it be recognised in JCs? Please help. 😢

A math is rather important as it opens many doors for your child later in her education journey. My advice for you is to go directly to the Math teacher, math hod and principal (dats the way the school channels work) to appeal for your child to take add math. Your child of course has to demonstrate interest in the subject. I have seen a student who is good in math but poor in sciences and therefore loses the opportunity to do add math. Note that your child's ability is ranked with her cohort. In the end, with appeal, that student was allowed to take add math but not allowed to sit for lessons in school. I happened to tutor that child. It was really an uphill task. Students still need to sit for lessons in school whereas the tutor can come in to strengthen concepts. She was prob offered POA cos her other subjects were not too good?

On the other hand, with add math, your daughter can still take H1 math in JCs or institutes which is a reduced version of H2 math. It's important to assess your child's apptitute. Is she more artsy or more sciency? I hope these insights will help you in making decisions in this important time.

The WS's answer is 2. Is it correct?

            http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4031/4280891135_19760b7710_o.jpg\">

            -24 / -10 + [-36 - 100 / (-5)] / 8
            = -24 / -10 + [-16 ] /8

Just wondering, from here on, shouldn't it be the -24/-10 be done first ?
            = -24 / -10+ [-16]/8
            = 2.4 + [-2]
            = 2.4 -2
= 0.4[/quote]Agree with your answer of 0.4 and agree that the Divisions should be carried out before Additions (as colored) per BODMAS

Just copy/paste the sum into google, with the [ ] converted to ( ).

Google can be used as a calculator. And yes, the answer is 0.4

Hi parents, just wondering why is there not a thread for secondary school maths questions and decided to start on one.(inspired by mathsguru contribution to this community)

So... yup this is for Q&A for secondary school maths questions. 😄 😄

Please state the level of the question when posting the question for the convenience of knowing which method should be used to explain the answers.(e.g. Sec 1) 😄

                Hope it helps! 😎

There's already one sticky for Sec 1 Maths. 🙂

Yes, but since it'll probably get messy, and there are existing threads for E and A Maths, perhaps, you can start level specific threads instead? 😄

We can sticky them for you.

do we really need separate threads for each level of Mathematics?

Wouldn’t just 1 maths thread suffice?
