I decided not to sent my dd for phonics class, i intend to homeschool her.
              Gung-ho!

May i ask why not send her for Phonics class?
              chuaeil:
I like Jolly Phonics, i have the handbook and the Dvd only. I was thinking how do you all plan for the phonics lesson by using jolly phonics cos inside they dont have any lesson plan as in lesson one do what step by step. she already know all the alphabets phonics sound and i dont know what to do next and i ever try on the Fitzroy reader book 1 and i realise that she memorizing instead of decoding so i stop everything on that.
              1. May i again ask what is it that you like about Jolly Phonics... so i have a better idea on how to offer the advice?

              2. When you say handbook... is it the guide book or the ones with the black line masters (inclusive of worksheets)?

              3. Who taught her the single letter sounds and how were you able to tell that she recognizes them... ie.. letter shapes, letter names, letter sounds?

              4. Which method was used to teach her the single letter sounds?
              chuaeil:
I just feel that Jolly Phonics is for those ppl that their sch is using Jolly phonics and then you can get the material to reinforce rather than homeschool them yourself.
Frankly, all Phonics methods can be used for school and homeschool. As parents who make the ultimate decision to teach the children ourselves, we have a responsibility to do the research (ground research and internet research) and also look into the relevant materials to purchase or DIY.

It doesn't matter which method the child's school adopts... you can always supplement with your own or a separate method of teaching your child... as long as the sounds do not clash (for example.. British/American) and as long as the child isn't confused by the different approaches. The child's willingness and receptiveness also highly depends on the level of interest the home method offers to supplement this reading revision/supplement.
              chuaeil:
Pls advice me cos the material is not cheap and i dont want end up i still have to sent her to the phonics class.
Actually, ALL the materials aren't cheap. Meaning to say, Jolly Phonics' materials are not cheap... Letterland materials not cheap... Montessori Phonics' materials lagi not cheap.... :faint: Well, basically... good stuff don't come cheap.

If you don't want the eventuality of having to send her to a proper phonics class, you need to make effort to do your research... find out more abt how to teach.. when to teach what.. and how to evaluate what you taught. As for the materials, you also need to see which are the things that need to be purchased to quickly teach her while she is receptive and what you can DIY, should time permit.

If done correctly, your child can reap the rewards of your labour/efforts and initiative. On top of it all... yes... save some $.

                Hi bud,
May i ask why not send her for Phonics class?
                - because you need time to sent and i still got a 2 yr old gal and however i would rather use the extra time to put her at home cos she go sch for 5 days.
                - if go enrichment dosent mean that we dont need to revise with her, we still need to do homework one.
                - There are so many things out there that need to enrichment where got so much money. I rather spent the $ wisely, eg: ballet, things like i cant do it myself.
                - even aft you send for enrichment, as a mother u still need to know more ant phonics so might as well i learn and teach myself.

                1. May i again ask what is it that you like about Jolly Phonics... so i have a better idea on how to offer the advice?
                - wahaha cos is britsh! not so sure i am fine with others but i dont really like letterland leh, dont know why.

                2. When you say handbook... is it the guide book or the ones with the black line masters (inclusive of worksheets)?
                - huh only got one type leh
                http://jollylearning.co.uk/jolly-shop/the-phonics-handbook-in-print-letters/

                3. Who taught her the single letter sounds and how were you able to tell that she recognizes them... ie.. letter shapes, letter names, letter sounds?
                - the leapfrog and myslef.
                - i do play games with her eg: i will take the alphabet and ask her to say the sound within 2 sec.
                - i will make the sound then she tells me the alphabet that i am sounding.
                - Sometime i will point to the beinning of the word and ask her to make the sound and tell me the alphabet.

                4. Which method was used to teach her the single letter sounds?
                - well this one i dont really said use what method cos she only know A-Z phonics not the blending sound as 'bl' etc
                - i also did jolly with ther for the 1st three groups.

I am trying to find one that really user friendly for homeschool that have lesson plan so i know what to do next and then i also can add on whatever things that i know to reinforced but the most impt is the guide.

i dont really stick to one type of teaching, i prefer mixing them accroding to the child needs and that is why i like home school.

Bud can help me to check it out this material and give me feedback if you can. your help is really much appreciated.
