All About Teaching and Learning Phonics

I am new to this forum…


Just want to share that the Intro course is only introduction of the materials used in the Montessori classroom for maths n phonics… It gives a newbie like a better understanding of the materials.

The hands on course will be more in depth and can use to teach yr child.
Anyone been to the hands on course???

Inspired by this thread, I went on a hunt for the P&J book.


I feel guilty for not doing anything for my turning 5 (apr) boy as we focus too much energy getting my P5 boy to study.

So we finally decided to send him to phonics class. Just signed up last week and will be starting this Sun. Than I came to this forum, and I feel even more guilty. :oops:

It was the teaching chinese thread than got me into this forum, than naturally I came to this thread, after reading like 20-30 pages, I feel so inspired by all the efforts that every parent put in to teach their kids, and I think I need to start now.

So I started to get him to play the starfall.com website, which he enjoyed, and is already picking up quite a number of sounds. I ordered the Letter Frog DVD, and decided to search for the P&J books.

My search today brought me to 5 popular book stores. The first has nothing...I mean nothing! Can't find a single P&J book. I almost gave up but went to the 2nd. Was glad to finally found it. But they lack 1a,b,c, 2a, 3a. So I bought the rest right up to book 6 (a,b,c).

Not wanting to give up I went to a 3rd store, and it's even worst. I went to the 4th store and found 1b,c,2a,3a. Was so happy that I bought right up to book 8 (a,b,c). Than I decided to ask the staff (I have no idea why I didn't do so in the beginning) where can I find 1a.

Bukit Panjang Plaza, Toa Payoh, Marine Parade, and Jurong (can't remember which part) came the answers. I finally decided to go and BPP is the nearest from where I am.

Lo and behold BPP have the full sets! So I end up buying all the remaining (right up to book 12). Haha....

So if anyone is looking for P&J books, BPP has the complete sets (not many complete sets left though).

I did saw another parent rushing to ask if they have 1a when I was at causeway point, wonder if she is from here

Will spend more time making sure he is sure of the sounds, than 2 letter words and 3 letter words before letting him start on the books, am I right?

You are welcome Actually luck is not needed, you need a lot of patience and persistence. The key word is \"everyday\", because kids need constant practice in order to learn well. For kids about 3 to 4 years old, it is important not to teach too long, 15 mins a day will do, otherwise they may reject the lessons.

Yes it is better to make sure he can read 3 letter words using phonics techniques, before starting on the Peter and Jane books.

Tamarind is it you who reco the book The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe? I found it in the library and my gal loves it, though she has nvr watched Narnia. Anymore books to reco? We are running out of books to borrow, the usual ones she borrows are rainbow magic (i dont like), tiara club (i dont like), magic ballerina, all enid blytons esp the adventure ones, naughty gal, malory towers etc, nancy drew, roald dahl, and others i cant rem.. I have no idea what else to search in the library for her. I buy quite many books too, esp those i feel may benefit my #2, #3.

These books are many times more interesting than Enid Blyton books.

I have a very silly qn to ask u, side track abit. I a going to teach my son phonics (3 letter words). I am thinking of using blank flash cards (i ordered 1000s 2 yrs back and did not make good use of them :oops: now thinkin gof using them), and using marker (red and black) to make the word cards. Is it ok to \"handwrite\" on the cards? or is it better to print out, so the letters are all uniform. I have sooo many markers coz my hb bot permanent makers instead of whiteboard makers (needed by my P2 gal).

I think it is fine to handwrite the cards, just make sure that you write neatly will do.
