When he can read the 3 letter words, you should also test him by asking him to pickup the letters that form a word. He should be able to pick the correct letters just by listening to the sounds.
      Hi Tamarind,

So means I need to have a set of letter cards too for him to pick out? Or just for him to pick out the words? So far I will scatter the words on the floor and I will say the word and ask him to pick out. I do not have individual letter cards. Time to make one?

When he picks out the words, it is hard to tell whether he is remembering it by sight, or using the phonics technique. If he can pick up the correct letters to make the word, that will mean that he is using the phonics sounds to read the words. There is no need to test him on every word, just pick a few random words will do.

            Hi porcupine12trade,

I think there are 2 schools of thoughts. One believe we can push our kids to learn a lot of things when they are young and can absorb like sponge. The other believe that each child is different and we should take time to teach different kids differently and not push too much.

I think I belong to the later. I just didn't want to push too hard, yet I do not want to do nothing. So I am going at a pace I feel he is comfortable with and will not reject me teaching. So just praying that everything will be better for him.

I also had a problem of briefing touching 2 letters blending and jump straight to 3 letters blending. I think I was push into it as his phonics class already started 3 letters blending and I want him to quickly know them. After 2 weeks, I still struggle with him on 'a' vowel.

Than I read here and reminded that I should do 2 letters blending first. So I went through all the 2 letters 'a' vowel for a couple of days. Than teach him to blend (black letter than red letters) with the 3 letters, and in one night he is able to read all the 'a' 3 letter words.

But doing all in one night is very tiring, we have to run around the house, do all sort of actions, take out things from kitchen, drive pretend cab/van, search the map, etc...to do all the words... ...maybe I should have split to 2 nights but was too excited he finally got it and many of the words we have taught before.

So I am going to do the same way with the next vowel and see if it works the same, at a more comfortable pace of coz.
            Hi Keltong,

I belong to the same cat as you too... I think all kids are different so I also take the same approach as you, also small part of it is i am lazy 😛

Thanks for sharing, I will do the same as you on the 2 letters blending first. it was not intentional to skip 2 letters blending, it was really forgotten haaa. Also coz 2 letters blending doesnt make sense, eg ag, ad, ab doesnt mean anything so my son was turn off. How did your son respond to the \"meaningless\" 2 letters? and yes, its very tiring to try getting them \"interested\"!! looking for stuff to relate to the words etc.

Yes like keltong wrote, it is better to teach the 2 letter words first, when he is familiar with them, then move on to 3 letter words.

When he can read the 3 letter words, you should also test him by asking him to pickup the letters that form a word. He should be able to pick the correct letters just by listening to the sounds.
Do u mean give him single letters + all the ag, ad, ab, at etc and get him to for 3 letter words? sounds found, i nvr tot of that, thanks for sharing.

Same qn i asked keltong, 2 letters blending seem meaningless to a child, how to get them interested? My son is turn off coz they dont mean anything to him, so i quickly jump to 3 letter blending to interest him

Yes. This is for young children who are not good at writing yet. For kids who can already write all the letters, just ask them to write will do.

                        Hi porcupine,

I missed this post of yours.

As we have been doing the 'a' vowel for quite a while, it was easy when I go back to re-enforce on the 2 letter words. After finishing all the 'a' vowel, I decided to go to the 'e' vowel which has less words, and I was surprised he got it immediately and we did all the 'e' vowel 2 letter and 3 letter words in like just 5-10 mins. So I asked him how did he know so fast. He told me he did it on the starfall.com website. He grew bored with the ABC letter sounds and went to play the words forming game and managed to learn from there. So I have to credit starfall.com for that. I was skeptical in the beginning about the starfall.com word blending games as it seems limited, but I have to rethink that.

So since then, it has been quite easy to do the 2 letter words with him. I will do 2 letter words of a particular vowel (say 'i'), than will start to go through the 3 letter words (of 'i') so that he can quickly go from meaningless 2 letter words to meaningful 3 letter words. So far it work for my boy. For my boy, praising him, high 5s, hugging is enough to motivate him as he is the emotional type so you will have to see what motivates yours, can't say my method will work for everyone.

As he gain more confident, the vowels later seems to be easier for him. After doing the massive 'i' vowel (massive because a lot of 3 letter words), which took a few more days, I find that when I was going through the 'o' vowel with him, he is already very smooth with the method.

During normal times, I also try to make sure he does not memorize the words by asking him to spell words we come across. So far so good even though he stumble at some of it but manage to do it after some prompting.
