      My pleasure, zac's mum. 😄

Hmm, chenlaoshi, if you don't mind, I'd like to plan for 2023 after psle headstart secondary, may I check with you that your secondary cl/ hcl class at bukit timah is available in the hybrid version as well (my kid is very lazy at travelling)? Thank you so much![/quote]
For HCL, the weightage for Paper 1 is even higher (cos compo is /60 instead of /40).

Weightage for Paper 1, Paper 2, Oral, LC respectively:
      Pri - 20%, 45%, 25%, 10%
      Sec - 30%, 35%, 25%, 10%
      Sec (HCL, no LC) - 40%, 40%, 20%.

It's not easy to score very high for compo writing in Sec level, because for narrative, besides descriptive phrases (not the primary sch ones like 急得像热锅上的蚂蚁 anymore 😂 ), students have to try and apply the writing techniques and concepts learnt (which I mentioned in my previous post) too. If students attempt 议论文/材料新闻,they need to know the relevant terms (e.g. for eco-friendly related topic: biodegrable 可降解, carbon emission 碳排放) as well as have knowledge about quotes/figures/examples to use as prove 论据 for their argument 论点.

Yes, sky (thanks for considering). My classes are conducted in hybrid manner (had to make such arrangements available cos of all the disruptions previously due to the Covid situation - advantage was it allowed those living far away to join in too).

Thank you chenlaoshi 🙏 Actually, bukit timah is convenient for us, just want to consider hybrid options in case of covid surge etcetera

Hi fellow parents, I have a question regarding 2023 O-level Chinese exam. Hope that you are able to help.

My son is a current Sec 2 student and will be taking Puhua exam next year. He is under the new chinese syllabus but then next year Sec 4 students who are taking the same exam as Sec 3 HCL students fall under the old syllabus.

In this case, I am curious how is the exam going to be tested? Should students be using both the old and new syllabus books?

            1)
2023 Sec 4 students taking pu-hua (O-level) in June month,
            born in 2007,
will not clash with your child

            because

your Sec 3 Higher Chinese son / daughter, born in 2008,
is only allowed to sit for
pu-hua (O-level) exam in November, not in June 2023.

            So, is clear cut here.
There is no clash with any pu-hua or Standard Chinese textbooks' content / syllabus used.

            2) However,
after pu-hua (O-level) results are released in August 2023,

for those Sec 4 students (born 2007) who didn't do well in June pu-hua exam, and

thus, wish to re-take a second, final last chance in November so as to improve their CL score (grade),
            in case
they need CL in their L1R5 computation for Junior College admission,

together along with 2008 born Sec 3 HCL students,
            then

            Yes, there is a clash

            because

you all are using different set of CL textbooks, hence different MOE syllabus.

So, what should you do, then ?
            =========================

            a)

if you are a Sec 3 HCL (born 2008) student, taking November 2023 pu-hua exam,

go and approach your school's Chinese HOD (head of department) for a quick,

            Summary CL listing

of those commonly, frequently encountered pu-hua vocab, taught inside the OLD CL syllabus, learnt by our 2023 Sec 4 pu-hua students (born in 2007).

            b)

if you are a Sec 4 pu-hua student (born in 2007), taking November 2023 pu-hua exam,

go and approach your school's Chinese HOD, for a

            SUMMARY CL listing of those

commonly, frequently encountered pu-hua vocab, taught inside the NEW CL syllabus, learnt by our 2023 Sec 3 HCL students (born in 2008).

            CL : Standard Chinese

            ============================

            Above points (1 and 2),
            only apply to
            CL vocabulary (\"ci yu\") difference.

            3) for Paper 1 zuowen and Paper 2 CL Comprehension (li jie wen da),
            there is no difference
            between

            students taught in
            2023 (Sec 3 and Sec 4) pu-hua.

              Hi niseko00,

It's worth noting in the first place that even under the old syllabus (e.g. this Year's Sec 3 HCL who took 2022 O Level CL), the textbooks used by CL and HCL are different - thus the words/phrases covered in syllabus varies too.

No components in the papers test those syllabus words directly (unlike the case in Pri level and sometimes in Sec level weighted assessments) - not even cloze passage (i.e. options in the 10 questions are not necessarily syllabus words/phrases).

More importantly, the same writing techniques and rhetoric approaches which will be tested in compre components are covered in both CL and HCL, i.e.

                  Hello all,

I have a Sec 3 gal taking HCL. May I know when will she take her HCL paper? If she passes her HCL, she doesn’t need to take it in JC? If she scores C6, 2 points will be deducted fr her O’level aggregate?

Hi. A 2023 S3 will take HCL O Level in 2024 (S4 year). D7 and above then no need to take MT in JC. Slight clarification; need C6 in both EL and HCL to get 2 points deducted from O Level aggregate.

Best to check with the school. I assume the O Level S3 HCL kids will take CL O Level at the end of S3 (IP kids may not take CL O Level). I.e. even if it is (extremely) likely one can pass the HCL O Level next year (in S4), you may be able to use the CL grade in the R4 or R5 slot (I think).

Hopefully, someone (that knows) will reply here.

Best of luck and Happy New Year!
