At NJC, can the kids choose any subj combi they want, ie triple science, double science etc? Or are there limited spaces for each combi such that the better ones get allocated their choice first?

There will be a parents' briefing in Jul. Hope to get more details from there too.
There was a letter sometime ago, only a few subjects (Physics, Biology, Adv. Lit, Adv Humanities) are up to students to select. There is still a group of core & non-core subjects.
The letter also states that allocation is based on merit, sch will assess the choice mades based on overall performance in GPA and the subj area concerned. -

A teacher who hates children? omg! Wrong career?
I asked my boy if he has heard any students' feedback abt a PM who is not well liked. It turned out there is one such PM who so happened to be one of his subj teachers. He was told some students think this PM is too strict/over-caring in the form class. He finds this subj T ok.
So maybe not really \"a T who hates children\" but likely some students are not comfortable with the style of this PM. -

Good to see you again. Though we do not know each other, but i had read your posts. You are knowlegable especially in the area on tertiary education, something i can learn from you. The other one-Innovate, just disappeared, hope she will be back.
Glad to hear from you again. -

Mine not taking. He prefers Physics, but it clashes with music programme, much to his disappointment.

Hi phankao,
I thought I'd bring our discussion here as it was getting off topic on the DSA thread.
I understand that there are no individual subject GPAs at NJC. So how is the overall GPA calculated? For the Raffles model for eg, the overall GPA is an average of the individual subject GPAs. I gather that's not how it's done at NJC?
Also, you mentioned you preferred to see percentile. I agree that's a more accurate reflection of performance vis-a-vis the cohort. Most schools would give a chart showing highest/lowest/median scorers so that's a fair indication.phankao:
It's percentile, not percentage that I was talking about. Eg. you could get 75%, which is an A, but the child is the top student bc the assessments were all very difficult, so his/her percentile would be 100th. I would be happy to see that as opposed to just the raw grade. It's like PSLE, yah?
So GPA 3.8 is about about 68% overall. What kind of percentage do you need to score for subjects to score A/A+?jtoh:

Actually it is not bad. There is no per subject GPA but an overall GPA. An overall of 3.8 to 3.9 usually comes about when the student has gotten all
\"A\" and Maybe 1 or a few \"A+\". Average GPA is around 3.2 to 3.5 generally. So 3.8+ is above average lah. Only cannot consider as among top student. Not unusual to have some students who are top in individual subjects among this group too. More indicative to look at their percentile than just GPA I find.
Generally students with 3.8 to 3.9GPA would have grades all minimum A, so means they have between 70-85% for most of their grades.[/quote]phankao:
For NJC, if compare with grades, it's quite similar.
Above 84.5% is A+
69.5% - 84.5% is A
64.5% - 69.5% is B+
59.5% - 64.5% is B
Anyway, I still prefer to look at the percentile.
