Hi all,
Anyone cam pm me for referral? I intend to enroll for Thomson branch. TIA! -
Dear mommies
My boy who is in K2 is currently in LC liftoff program. I find the workbook that they used is far far too difficult. There are
- too many vocabulary each week. Words like "fantastic", "incredible", "frolicked", the list goes on and on. Every week there are lots of new words. Frankly speaking, some words are alien to me as well. How do they expect a child to learn so fast?
- passage is hard to understand to grab the child’s interest
- they teach too fast
I thought in teaching phonics, it should be taught like in leapfrog videos where they learn the word "all", then the put another alphabet in front like "call", "mall", 'tall". I thought in this way the kid will learn very efficiently.
I know that parental involvement is expected in this level. But it seems to me that these words are for much higher level, surely not for K2.
I am seriously thinking whether to pull him out of the program as I see that now my boy is not very confident in blending, probably because there are just too many new things to learn in class. I feel he is not catching up.
Is there any mommies that feel the same as me? -
Just to update, i have enrolled my kid to Lcentral. No referral but i still get 30 off bcoz of the leaflet discount!!!
Thank you!! -

Hi xueyan,
Is your son just started his liftoff program? or half way through?
My K1 son initially was put under launchpad, but was upgraded to liftoff coz they think that launchpad was too easy for him.
now in Liftoff, i am kinda impress at their workbook, it seems tough, but i think they can manage if they put in more effort. Need not worry about your kids, liftoff also have blending, call, mall are just simple basic phonics, they need to learn blending etc.
Liftoff is like preparation for P1, since he is already in K2, launchpad will definitely be too easy for him, but next level will be liftoff... Unless you are talking about changing him to another centre.. -

To me I feel that for every lesson, they have many new words to learn. These new words are not repeated in the next lesson. So how to expect a K2 child to learn so many new things. Perhaps I shouldn't ask him to blend the words so much, but learn to recognise the new word?
The LC teacher told me to just spend 10 minutes every day to read the passage with him. However with so many new words to read, we need to explain the meaning of each as well. I thus spend much more time in reading than the teacher suggested. In the end I realise that even though we spent a lot of time in revising the work, he still don't learn much because in the new lesson, there is more new words.
Is this is what enrichment class is all about? -

isn't it good that they are introducing new words to your child? Do they provide the meaning too? How does LCentral introduce new words, thru compo, compre or cloze passages? Do they make them learn the spelling of those new words? Or make them construct sentences using those new words?
Frankly at K2, they shouldn't be blending or spelling simple words like call, mall, ball anymore. That is should be N2-K1 level

Hi Xueyan,
For me, enrichment class suppose to cover more than what is being taught at school, something new & something more, and that is why we are paying extra $, if they are merely teaching what can be covered in their child care, then there will be no point spending so much $ on it.
It is good to expose new words, to build up their vocabulary, of course, it will be more beneficial if kids know the meaning of the words, it is like reading them a story, they might not be able to fully understand the whole story, but at time goes by, they will learn.
Perhaps, u can read paragraph by paragraph daily, try to explain bit by bit, then u shd be able to cover the whole passage with your kid & he will be able to understand it well. Take the reading time as a bonding time, then both of u will not feel stress!
Kid's is a a sponge, they will absorb a lot of things, don't underestimate them
