I have always been involved in Parent Suport activities in school and get the chance to see teachers close up regularly. From what I have observed, teachers these day are more aware of parents expectations including feeding back progress (or lack of it). Teachers are also human and some simply lack sufficient skills on how to comunicate effectively, sounding as if they are complaining. It also has much to do with the attitudes of Principal/Vice P. as they are lead the way. Both the Principals in my Ds's schools have great people skills, are approachable and this has filtered to the teaching community in the schools. :lol:

Also, teachers usually know which student has parents who are concerned about progress and feedback, and which students have parents who do not care or do not want to have anything to do with school.

For my Ds, his Form Teacher will give us parent's a letter giving us her email/phone number. We also get a letter from his MT teacher! I could Call or Email/SMS the teacher if there are anything that I need clarifications or feedback on my ds. :lol:

Just to share some of the feedback I heard from frenz which has kids in

GEYLANG METHODIST SCHOOL (PRIMARY) .

If I were you, I would go for GMSP becos it will be a lesser headache when she goes to Sec School - easier to enter through affiliation. :lol:
But it all depends on what you think is 'good' in yr view. Some goes for discipline, some goes for PSLE results, some goes for CCA, etc etc. :?:

Anyway, in choosing a pri school for yr kid, you will need to know yr kid's strengths and weaknesses, and choose a school that can complement and enhance yr kid's strengths and weaknesses . :roll: :roll:

My Ds1 used to be like that when he was 5+ yr..... He will also waste time by looking for his pencil, eraser or chip in when people are talking. :x
Until I found a way that works for him. First I make sure that everything he needs is in his pencil case (his responsibility after awhile). No distraction such as TV or loud games by the family.

Instead of giving him a specific time to finish his work, he has to write down his start time and end time (after that,we will calculate the total time spent). Since his Chinese HW can usu. be completed within 20-30 mins, I know he will not be made to sit at the table for long hours. Now he can sit and complete his CHinese at one sitting up to 30mins (it started with shorter assignment that requires only 10 mins).
I guess this method works for DS1 cos he is motivated to finish his work with a certain time frame, without making too many mistakes.

Before doing that, i will sit down with my son as to how much to break into and how much time to allocate for each task and overall duration of doing the work. :lol: :lol:

An incentive also helps. Something very immediate is the best.

Maybe you can also help her develop the habit of concentrating by supervising her closely and making sure that she stays focused for short periods (start with 30 mins), then gradually lengthening the time. In between, she can have short breaks (not more than 5/10 mins). It's tough for you to have to do this, but over time it will help .

Also, giving her a quiet, distraction-free place to do homework may help. My Ds1 has a desk in his room facing a white wall. No toys or other books are allowed within view . My younger girl and Ds2 isn't allowed in the room at all while their brother does homework .

Its not easy to be a parent, we r all learning! !keke....... :lol: :lol:

I think Geylang Methodist Primary School is still a much better school than a normal neighbourhood school if you want to compare academic results. Is your child a motivated learner? From what I've heard of friends with kids there ,Geylang Methodist Primary School is very stressful and there's lots of HW. :roll:

If possible, go to the school in the morning when the pupils are walking to the sch or during the dismissal hours. Hopefully you can meet some parents and get to talk to them to find out more about the school.

- An all-girls' education may actually be good for girls who tend to be socially awkward and shy. A girls' school is more likely to be more sensitive to girls' needs than in a co-ed situation. Although the more boisterous girls usually gains attention from their peers and teachers, the shyer girls actually have a larger pool of people to form friendships with.

- Also, research do show that for some subjects like Math, girls tend to not do as well as boys, so in a girls' school, these subjects are usually given more focus.

- Single sex schools have a higher chance of providing a better rounded education because there is no stereotyping as to what subjects or activities are \"for boys\" (e.g. science, math, rock climbing) and what \"for girls\" (e.g. languages, arts, dance), so the kids are more exposed to different things without fear of being labelled .

- government aided schools and Govt schools differ not only in the way they are funded.

- government aided schools are allowed autonomy in the way they transmit school values to aided heir students. Govt schools have to be secular in their teachings, but GA schools are allowed to teach values in terms of their religious beliefs.

- Also,government aided schools tend to have a longer history compared to most Govt schools. This history usually lead to the GA schools being staffed with ex-students, which in turns lead to a stronger sense of school spirit.

-government aided schools also usually have stronger Alumni (which is part of the fund-raising effort), and this usually compels the school to focus a great deal on their school results, so that they can also please the Alumni. Of course, this is not to say that Govt schools don't perform - a great many do for school pride, but in GA schools, the number of stakeholders in the school is greater.

- A great number of government aided schools are single-sex schools (Only 2 Government primary schools are single sex: Haig Girls' and Raffles Girls'). Some government aided schools are linked to either clan associations or religious groups.

i believe For parents who are \"kancheong\" about more preparation for PSLE, this school would \"appear\" to be \"underperforming\"! ke... :lol:

it's really all up to you. There are certainly more factors to consider than whether a school is government aided school or not.

So perhaps some research into these schools would help in making a decision .

haha but a lot of headache starts after primary sch.
but it is true, primary school can also be fun. Sometimes I do get stress up by my kid's results but come to think about it, as long as he is doing his best, it's ok. :mrgreen:
