My son, who is on the spectrum, scored AL19. We’re looking at the following schools and would appreciate any feedback on them in terms of student support, discipline and anything else you might like to share:

1. Bedok South Secondary
2. Changkat Changi Secondary
3. Bedok Green Secondary
4. Broadrick Secondary

Kid’s most keen on Changkat Changi as he’s in airplane nut and is keen on their SOAR program, but so far I don’t see much feedback on the school in terms of academics or student welfare etc. Hope to hear from those with children in the school.

Question - what does elective mean for some of the subjects (e.g I see E Lit has core and elective)..how does it count towards their O level grade?

Elective Lit. means Literature and Social Studies are counted as one humanities subject. Core/Pure Lit. means Literature only makes up one humanities subject. Hence, there are more materials to study for Core subjects compared to Elective. As an example, you study 55% of the material for Elective Geography compared to Pure Geography.

For the computation of L1R5 in the O level, it can either be Elective Humanities or Pure / Core Humanities.

Social Studies is compulsory. Hence, all students need to take at least one Elective Humanities. As for Core Humanities, it depends on the subject combination taken by the students.

I see. Quite different from my time in secondary school where we only had cores. Is SS a compulsory O level subject for sec schools today?

Alhana14 - When my DD was in sec 1 in 2017 the whole cohort went through a first round trial selection thing to shortlist those girls who are more suitable for sports in general. Then all these shortlisted girls try out for all the sports cca (they go round the various stations) and then I think they receive an invite if the CCAs are interested in having them join. These girls then have the option of putting that cca on their option form when they select CCAs.


Not so sure about the 2 CCAs part though. Generally now the kids don't do 2 CCAs (unlike our time in school) cos they go fairly intensive in the one CCA alone. Performing Arts groups meet 2 to 3 times a week. Some of the sports are the same. So it might be quite a stretch for your girl. Not to mention the timings of the CCA days will probably clash.

As for sec 3 combination, the school offers the following as \"compulsory\"
English
MT/HMT (no CLB)
E. Math
A. Math
Social Studies
Chemistry (either pure or as part of combined science)

The recommended combination is 2 Lang, 2 math, 2 science, 2 humanities.

They offer all 3 humanities as core and elective.

They also have econs, MEP, DEP, Art as other subjects.

Triple science and combined science both offered. Most girls take 2 pure sciences... either pure chem pure bio or pure chem pure physics.

Because it's a single stream school, they are able to offer the girls more choices compared to the other schools with 3 streams.

Thanks for the info kspassing! That's very informative. Yes, my kid went for the Open House today and was also told that 2 CCAs would be too time consuming. She is very interested in 2, so will see how it goes.

My DD scored 249 and is also considering TKGS as her top choice. We like to know if they can take up 2 CCA options (eg 1 sport and 1 club CCA) and for sports (say basketball), is it usually offered only through a selection process or to ex school players?


Also, how do we find out the subject combinations offered from S3 onwards? TIA!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we have submitted the necessary documents as proof of the change in income status. It seems it might take at least 3 months to take effect. Sigh.

Hi fellow parents. Has anyone had a change in their household income situation (much lower income due to a change in job) while your child was in EIPIC and was able to qualify for higher subsidies? Even though my husband has changed jobs and is now only drawing a fraction of his former pay, we still have to pay full fees due to the 12-month means testing calculation. As the full fees are really quite high given our current income situation, I’m wondering if we can expect any revision in the immediate future. Hope to hear from those who have experienced this.

Hi everyone. I’m new to this forum and thread. My son is turning 5 later this year and was diagnosed with ASD early last year. During his last review with his doc at KKH, she suggested that we put him in EIPIC after observing him having difficulties in writing the alphabet (he doesn’t like to write). However, I understand the wait time for the program at the centres we are being referred to have 9-12 month wait times. As such, SG Enable has suggested that I check out the Private Intervention Centres that offer subsidies for approved EIPs. My question today is, is/has anyone here sent their child to Kids Cove at Upper Paya Lebar Road? Also, my son is now currently studying at Seeds D’Learning House in Katong. I understand that they also have early intervention program for literacy and math, and wonder if anyone here has sent their child for this program. Any feedback on both (esp Kids Cove) is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
