    • RE: All About Teaching and Learning Phonics

      Precioustotz:
Thanks all for answering to my question! Sorry, I haven't been checking in the forum for a while. My kids are more or less familar with all the individual alphabet sounds.

Am moving on to teaching them simple blending during school holidays. Such a pity Tamarind blog is not longer available. Am wondering how I should proceed from here. Just started Peter and Jane readers for my kids. Everything is a bit late for my elder as she is going to Primary One next year. The good news is she loves Peter and Jane and keeps rushing me to let her read on. ๐Ÿ™‚
Welcome. Glad that your kids are progressing fine! ๐Ÿ™‚

      lisssa:
      hi parents,

I have a boy that is suspected of ADHD. He gets distracted easily and disturbs his friends quite frequently. I often find it difficult to manage his behaviours. Any suggestions on effective strategies?
      Hi lisssa,

Unfortunately, there is no magic to bullet to address all behaviors that may negatively affect the learning.

Parents need to work collaboratively with the school for proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate child behaviors.

Setting clear rules (for work & play) and boundaries (and be consistent at implementing it) seemed to be a good first step.

    • RE: Comparing English Enrichment Programmes

      Hi parents,

Weโ€™re new to this forum and would like to introduce ourselves.

Alpha to Omega is an International Learning Institute, founded in Chennai, India in 1988.

Having served hundreds of students over two decades and helping them to acquire the academic strategies and skills necessary to reach their academic potential and develop the self-confidence to succeed, we are delighted to be in Singapore.

We believe in the promise and potential in each human life. We do not accept typecasting or generalizing that often occurs for children with learning differences. Our students are defined not by their learning challenges, but by their character, their accomplishments and their dreams.

Ours is a welcoming and affirming environment where lessons are customized and progress is continually monitored and refined.

Each student is loved and cherished as an individual with particular needs and unique gifts.

Get in touch with us today. Weโ€™re located at Upper Thomson.

I learnt a lesson. Do not belittle our aspie children. Just let go.

I've learnt that too. It may take a bit more prep (that's what I find comparing my kids), and can be a lot more nerve-wracking, but they can usually do it. They may get messed up more often, or take longer to figure things out, but they can generally manage if we let them.

Indeed, most of the times, it is us, as parents and adults, that box and limit the potential of a child because of our misconceptions and mindsets. Expand our minds and watch them fly.

      Hi experts here,

thanks for your guidance especially Tamarind and Bud for being so generous in sharing. I am trying to teach my kids phonics but am confused with the sound of letter a. From starfall I hear it as \"arh\" but from leapfrog dvd I hear it as \"air\". I recalled when my dd attended phonics class at krtc, the teacher told me letter E and A both sounds the same and it was \"air\".

Anyone can enlighten? I was not taught phonics when I was young. It seems like learning English for me all over again. LOL
      Hi Precioustotz,

You are correct, there are two major sounds for the letter a - long vowel sound and short vowel sound - and a minor sound - schwa.

      1) The long vowel \"a\" sounds like the letter \"A\" as in the word \"Apron\"
      2) The short vowel \"a\" sounds like \"air\" as in the word \"Apple\"
      3) There is also an unstressed vowel \"a\" sound also known as (schwa), which you hear as \"arh\" as in the words \"alone\" and \"sofa\".

If you have any further questions, feel free to get in touch with me.

      Hi Mummies and daddy,

I have intended to enroll my son in Dynamic EIP. My son has gone for assessment and their recommendation is 1-1 speech therapy for his speech and oral motor development and a suitable class if he were enrolled in EIP. My son is 2 1/2 yr old.

Any mummies' LOs there? Can you sit in for first 2-3 classes? or just send him and left?

Btw, they are very slow in responding my email. Always have to remind them. V pissed off.

      TIA.
