      Hi TAS,

I am a parent with children at TAS but I have friends who are not in TAS and they would
like to buy the vol 2. However they cannot make it on Sunday, some of them have church etc.
Is it possible to have the launch on another day as well? However, i perfectly understand if it is not possible as you are selling it at Popular. But just would like to know cos it would help them prepare their kids for SA1 too. Or possible for me to buy for them on another day beside sunday? I can come down on monday to get.

    • RE: Parents, not enrichment centres, are key to result

I think if teachers were equipped to teach well, that will go a long way to help the problem. My sister who was in NIE said that she learnt some general principles of teaching. For specifics, she was exposed to what heuristics were but tts about it. So when she was put into the school and asked to teach P5, she was ill-equipped. She did not know the heuristic methods herself and had to buy assessment books to try to figure it out. For english, she was also at a loss to be able to explain the rules of synthesis for eg. If she did not bother to put in extra research and hard work, she would have been another ineffective teacher.

I am wondering why can’t NIE teach the teachers more specific skills to teach. The teachers themselves are not familiar with heuristics and they know English but they do not know the exact rules to explain for eg why this verb works and this does not work.

In the end, the teachers just give up and that is why we are sending our kids to school to learn nothing much.

    • RE: The Alternative Story (TAS) - Discussion

My child has been in TAS since late last year. Abt 2 months or so. I find that they do cover quite a lot in one lesson compared to other centres. But my child can remember what is taught. I think the methods are effective.

Like recently for compre, I saw some writing about vocab. And I realized that the teacher taught them in order to understand unknown vocab words, there are 4 things they can do and I felt it was very clear. For compo now they are also teaching the kids how to have stronger characters for the story and i find the stories very humorous and interesting. Classes tend to be big but if teacher can hold their attention and teach well, I am more than happy.

    • RE: All About Preparing For PSLE

      Hi parents,

I am rather worried about Science and English. I realize from hearing what my friends say that their kids can get A star for Math easily but not many get A star for English and Sci esp English. Is there any truth to this? How to help our kids in this area?

    • RE: All About English Creative Writing

Could your dd be in a new class? I heard from another friend whose ds joined a new class that in the beginning, the compo writing will not be one whole compo, it will be parts of the compo for the kids to memorise and write out. They usually memorise the important parts then write out. I think for my case after about 3-4 weeks, then they went on to write whole compos. I asked the teacher about the pacing and she said as they move on and can understand the techniques more, it will be one compo written almost every week or every 2 weeks.
