RE: All About Parent Volunteers (PV)
Hi, I applied for St Andrews PV but received email that they decided to discontinue this due to COVID-19. Other options under Phase 2B are church affiliation or grassroots, I have neither.
So my only option if I still want St Andrews is Phase 2C. Looking at past balloting history, Phase 2C seems quite ok? But for next year’s P1 registration, it may be tricky since those who can’t register under Phase 2B will try under 2C thus having more applicants?
Any thoughts on this?
Also, I have a question, my husband is Catholic. Can we use his baptism cert to register for a Catholic school under Phase 2B then if unsuccessful, as we don’t live within 1km of any Catholic schools, can we then try for St Andrews under Phase 2C?
Any thoughts and suggestions very much appreciated as this is very nerve-wrecking for me. I would like my boy to have a good Christian education but unfortunately my alma mater is a girl’s school, husband’s school is now defunct. -

RE: All About Preparing For Primary One
Thanks everyone for the advice!
Zac’s mum, what you mentioned made me realize that I’m worrying myself over nothing & this’ll cause a negative impact on him. I shall be mindful to let nature run its course & enjoy him now.
Floppy, I’ve tried exposing him to different genres of music. Currently, he’s only keen on National Day songs, it’s been like that since last year’s National Day performance in school. We downloaded a heap of NDP songs & he sings along to them.
When will it be appropriate for him to learn a musical instrument? I’m thinking more of ukulele as he has seen those displayed & expressed an interest. He also has music & movement in school. -
RE: All About Preparing For Primary One
Thanks Zac’s mum & Floppy for your advice. I’m more at ease now after hearing that I’m on the right track. I’ve always felt it was more important to build ‘soft skills’ rather than emphasize too much on academics.
What got me really worried was heresy & friends telling me that I should start preparing my boy for P1 from K1 otherwise he’ll struggle from the start. Eg. teachers in some schools briefly touch on a subject yet assessments/tests/exams are difficult as they expect the parents to send their kids for enrichment or tuition. That kids are expected to know 12 timestable, addition/substraction, math concepts & drawings even before they start P1.
My friend even shared with me her daughter’s spelling list & I was shocked that "enthusiastic" was in a P1 list! My boy can’t even read now & P1 is only 3 years away! Really scared the wits out of me!
Yes, my boy’s an only child, he’s not particularly interested in team sports though. From what his teachers tell me, he interacts well in class & is well-liked.
He tried rock climbing 2 weeks ago during a school excursion for their June holiday programme & enjoyed it immensely. He’s been talking about tennis (don’t know where that came from as neither of us play it).
We’re thinking to enrol him for MMA next year, more to build confidence, focus, discipline & self-defense. He’s a shy boy, not very confident & I feel lacks discipline & focus, gets distracted easily eg. one minute he’s playing with Lego & the next, he’s doing another thing.
He’s very happy in his current preschool but as we’re moving to Kim Keat, I’m wondering if I should change schools. It seems that MindChamps at Toa Payoh HDB Hub is more structured but more academically focused? He’s currently in MapleBear Havelock. Any thoughts on this? -

Hi,
Does any parents have any first hand experience with Maple Bear Alexandra (Alexis) or Pat's Schoolhouse Tanglin or MindChamps PreSchool @ Tanglin?? I am pondering which one to choose for my daughter N1.
I'm not sure about Maplebear Alexandra, my boy attends MapleBear Havelock in the Annexe building of Furama Riverfront hotel.
It's a big centre with big indoor playground, good & clean facilities, teachers are very caring & it's directly managed by Mrs Pat Koh. My boy's very happy there, he started when they opened 3 years ago. Balanced emphasis on academics & play. It's not too far away from the Alexandra centre, you may wish to call them for a school visit. -
RE: All About Preparing For Primary One
Hi,
My boy is in N2 this year & I'm worried his P1 readiness. With the changes in MOE syllabus, is it necessary to send him for preparatory classes?
He's very happy in his preschool, can recognize the alphabets (but always gets confused with U, V, W & Y), recognizes a few Chinese strokes, can count 1 to 10 meaningfully in English but still fumbles counting from no. 5 in Chinese.
He's started taking Chinese Speech & Drama and Robotics enrichment classes offered by his preschool & is enjoying it. Goes for swimming lessons on Saturday, he doesn't like it but we think it's an essential life skill.
I don't want to stress him too much but am really worried if he's really prepared for what lies ahead. I don't want him to get a culture shock as that may put him off learning.
Any opinions or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks!

RE: Childcare near Zion, Alexandra, Havelock, Tiong Bahru

Hi,
I'm moving to River Valley area next year and need to find a full day childcare for my 3 year old. Is there any affordable ones to recommend in this area?
I understand the ones at Tiong Bahru etc are usually packed out so I need to start my search asap. Hope someone can help, thanks!
You may wish to consider MapleBear Havelock at the Annexe building of Furama Riverfront Hotel or MapleBear Alexandra at Alexis condo (near IKEA).
My boy has been attending MapleBear Havelock since it started 3 years ago & he's very happy there. It's a bigger centre compared to the one at Alexandra & some of their other centres. It's run by Mrs Pat Koh herself, some other centers are franchises.
They have a big indoor playground, good & clean facilities, in-house cook, bilingual immersion programme (every class has an English & Chinese teacher), friendly staff & teachers, disciplined school (no kids running around, no shouting/screaming etc).
You may want to make an appointment for a school visit.
