All About Parent Volunteers (PV)
-
Hello all, this is my first post in the forum. My son is born in 2015 and looking to enroll in P1 in 2022. We are planning to apply to be at Parent Volunteer at Fairfield Methodist Primary in the hope of being bumped up into Phase 2B. We are currently located slightly past 2km but are willing to move to be within 1KM to improve our chances. We are also no Methodists hence the church route isn’t a viable option.
Are there any existing PVs at FMPS here that can shed some light on the process, what are the skillsets the school is looking for, more so during this unprecedented times? The pandemic has changed the way the world evolves and to some extent, the PV requirements too. We are just honest working parents who are keen to enroll my elder boy in FMPS and subsequently if successful, my younger son too.
Any advice welcome. -

Take a look to see which of those skills sets/areas Mentioned on the form that you can help out in. I’m not very sure, but maybe those services which you can offer remotely (eg Zoom webinar for the kids) may be viewed more favorably.
When I applied several years ago, I stated upfront in my application exactly what you mention: “We are currently located slightly past 2km but are willing to move to be within 1KM to improve our chances.”
The school picked me but eventually I turned it down as I chose to spend my precious hours at another school. -

I don’t have any super unique talent/skills, just a flair for English & Science. And some music background. And willingness to carve out time to suit the school’s hours. Truth be told, the school that I eventually PVed at, didn’t even use those skills (other than at one half-day career exhibition)...the bulk of the time was spent being a teacher’s assistant in the classroom, or being a chaperone on learning journeys, or making CNY decorations. -
Thank you zac’s mum. I completed the form sometime back but wanted to gather more feedback from other savvy parents to improve our chances. With COVID-19, life will be changing so while we are all wondering what is the new norm, i am just curious to see if anyone knows how better we can offer our services so that the school will consider us as PVs. I applied to Henry Park as PV too but they also politely rejected me.

You got a reply from Henry Park this year? I've been waiting for either a rejection or for the application to go forward. I even e-mailed the school with no responses yet.

Hi, I applied for St Andrews PV but received email that they decided to discontinue this due to COVID-19. Other options under Phase 2B are church affiliation or grassroots, I have neither.
So my only option if I still want St Andrews is Phase 2C. Looking at past balloting history, Phase 2C seems quite ok? But for next year’s P1 registration, it may be tricky since those who can’t register under Phase 2B will try under 2C thus having more applicants?
Any thoughts on this?
Also, I have a question, my husband is Catholic. Can we use his baptism cert to register for a Catholic school under Phase 2B then if unsuccessful, as we don’t live within 1km of any Catholic schools, can we then try for St Andrews under Phase 2C?
Any thoughts and suggestions very much appreciated as this is very nerve-wrecking for me. I would like my boy to have a good Christian education but unfortunately my alma mater is a girl’s school, husband’s school is now defunct. -

Yes can go 2B, if unsuccessful then go 2C. SAJS if <1km will be safe.

If SAJS in 2C<1km is safe, then no need to register 2B. just go for it.

Thank you, Orb & Davischew for the reassurance! Yes, we’re staying within 1km of SAJS.
